Mason Brooks
Mason Brooks, known professionally as Mase Effect, was a White American student and emerging DJ and music producer from the Baltimore area and a member of The Ride-or-Dies, the childhood friend group that also included Logan Weston, Malik Carter, Jordan Wells, and James Pennington. Loud, confident, and relentlessly funny, he was the group’s trash-talker and class clown. He attended Edgewood High School and remained in Baltimore after graduation while beginning a small music-production venture.
Education
Mason attended a Baltimore gifted academy with Logan, Malik, Jordan, and James before transferring to Edgewood. Mason, Logan, Malik, and Jordan became friends in second grade; James joined in third grade after moving from England. When Logan was bullied at the academy, Mason urged him to save the messages and reported the harassment to a teacher. The teacher told Mason to stay out of it.
At Edgewood, Mason served as the student council’s event coordinator.
Around his fourteenth birthday during the COVID-19 pandemic, Mason was struggling with bullying despite his friends’ support. Online schooling worsened the harassment as his peers spent more time indoors and online. Seeing his attempts to report Logan’s bullying dismissed also discouraged Mason from seeking help for himself; he feared that adults would laugh at his own experiences.
In spring 2024, Mason missed the deadline for obtaining school-formal venue quotations. Logan completed the work while Mason was ill, and Mason later apologized repeatedly for the added burden.
Mason discussed college visits during senior year, although he remained uncertain that college was for him. He graduated from Edgewood in 2025. James, who attended a different school, joined Mason, Malik, and Jordan in supporting Logan and Jacob Keller at the graduation ceremony.
Personality and Communication
Mason was social, loud, confident, and willing to organize gatherings. His humor combined trash talk, physical comedy, exaggerated complaints, shameless flirting, all-capital group messages, and absurd observations delivered as if they were perfectly ordinary. He and James became a comedic pair: James supplied theatrical excess, while Mason answered with deadpan commentary and committed physical bits. They flicked popcorn at their more serious friends and played off each other during group gatherings. James’s performances could leave Mason laughing so hard he wheezed.
Mason ordinarily called his mother “Mom” or “Ma.” He used “Mama” only when he was at his most distressed.
Sports arguments were one of Mason’s favorite ways to provoke Jordan. He deliberately challenged Jordan’s opinions until the normally quiet basketball player became animated. During one basement game, however, Jordan and Malik were already arguing about basketball statistics; Mason interrupted their “basketball nerd-off” because he wanted them to start the game.
Mason initially dismissed concern about Jacob’s absence from school, but later apologized and offered practical help during his medical difficulties. His friendship with Jacob developed through that support and their time together with the group.
Mason experienced bullying and fatphobic comments about his body size over the years. He generally responded with a quick comeback in public, sometimes before he had processed how much a remark hurt; the hurt could surface later, after the exchange was over. His response varied with his emotional state at the time. His enjoyment of expressive clothes, shameless flirting, and physical closeness with friends coexisted with sensitivity to some comments about his size, with their effect also depending on who was speaking and how supported he felt.
Mason and James were the two White members of a close group that also included Logan, Jordan, and Malik. Mason saw his friends face racist suspicion at school while moving through those same institutions differently. He and James spoke up when Logan was bullied, but their reports did not ensure that adults protected him. During one tense police encounter, Logan felt Mason move closer and heard Malik stop laughing.
Physical Appearance and Style
Mason had been known as the “chubby kid” throughout childhood and already had a substantial build at fourteen.
By late high school, Mason was about five feet ten inches tall and weighed approximately 220–240 pounds, with a stocky, broad build and substantial muscle beneath a noticeable layer of softness. He was somewhat heavier than Malik Carter, despite being about an inch shorter. Mason had a relatively long torso and somewhat shorter legs. His shoulders were his widest point, but his waist narrowed only moderately before meeting fairly broad hips, giving his body a roughly rectangular outline with rounded edges through his middle. His chest was thick, with softness over it, and his stomach curved gently forward when he stood relaxed and folded above his waistband when he sat.
Mason carried similar substance through his legs, with thick thighs, full calves, and sturdy ankles. His upper arms remained broad at rest, with their muscle becoming more distinct when he lifted or pushed something. His forearms tapered toward fairly broad wrists. He had wide palms, moderately short fingers, and prominent knuckles; his broad hands gave his casual shoulder claps substantial contact.
He had fair skin that flushed easily and burned in summer, freckles across his nose and forearms, wide-set blue eyes, and short sandy-brown hair. He often forgot sunscreen despite Malik’s reminders. His face was mobile and expressive; he could hold a straight expression until a joke landed, then break into a full-body laugh.
Mason dressed as loudly as he talked, favoring graphic T-shirts, bright or flashy jackets, mismatched socks, and a rotating collection of sneakers. Hoodies were another regular part of his wardrobe. His physical affection was similarly casual and unceremonious: back claps, shoulder shoves, close seating, and easy jostling were part of how he moved among longtime friends.
His T-shirts caught across his shoulders and upper arms before resting against his stomach. He needed enough room through the thighs of his jeans to sit comfortably, and hoodies retained the apparent breadth of his chest and upper back. Sitting close beside him brought substantial shoulder and upper-arm contact.
When comfortable, Mason settled into a loose slouch with his shoulders slightly forward, feet apart, and elbows resting on nearby surfaces. Straightening or throwing his arms out during a joke increased the space he occupied. Those broad gestures accompanied his physical comedy and casual jostling with friends.
Mason was a deep sleeper and snored as a teenager. His energetic, animated behavior while awake contrasted with how thoroughly he settled into sleep once he rested.
Health and Neurodivergence
Mason had ADHD that went undiagnosed during childhood and adolescence. His father, Bill, regarded evaluation as unnecessary, interpreting Mason’s difficulties as ordinary behavior for a boy or as a need to apply himself more. Bill’s recognition of Mason’s intelligence reinforced his belief that greater effort should be enough.
The effort Mason spent compensating for his undiagnosed ADHD contributed to his fatigue. His energetic manner and ability to perform well did not reflect how much effort that compensation required.
Family and Core Relationships
Mason lived with his mother, Janine, and his father, William “Bill”, during high school and after graduation. Feeling that both parents opposed his DJ ambitions, he increasingly kept career difficulties to himself at home.
For Mason’s fourteenth birthday, Janine and Bill surprised him with Tiny, a male Siberian–Maine Coon kitten. Tiny grew into a large cat and was particularly affectionate with Mason, who named him for his small meow. Mason handled approximately 95 percent of Tiny’s care and was diligent about grooming and veterinary visits. He found brushing Tiny relaxing. With help from Ryan, a carpenter friend of Bill’s, Mason built Tiny a catio; Ryan also built the cat condo in Mason’s basement studio.
Janine

Mason was close to Janine, whose pride in him and his music was unconditional. She worried about how hard he might work for little return and how few people made a sustainable living in music. Her concerns and mediation of his arguments with Bill left Mason believing that she did not support him at all. She did not yet understand the extent of his hurt when he called about “Summer Moon” in summer 2025; learning it later broke her heart.

Bill worked in finance and expected Mason’s intelligence to lead him toward a similar career. Mason defended the intellectual and technical work involved in his music, and their repeated disagreements strengthened his determination to prove himself as a DJ.
Their relationship remained tense in summer 2025. Bill interpreted Mason’s reluctance to talk as ordinary teenage withdrawal.
When Bill listened to “Summer Moon” and messaged Mason to say he was proud of him that summer, Mason was overwhelmed by the unexpected praise and called his closest friends, unsure how to respond.

Mason joined Logan, Malik, Jordan, and James on a Caribbean cruise for Logan’s sixteenth birthday. The friends organized games and running bets during the trip.
After Logan’s hospitalization near graduation, Mason proposed a welcome-back gathering at the Grid.
Professional Life

His electronic music centered on dubstep and bass-heavy production, with house and dance mixed in. He was equally enthusiastic about ragged, aggressive tracks and strong melodic writing. He cited Avicii and Zedd as influences, with Zedd particularly informing his melodies.
Mason began releasing tracks in high school and adopted the DJ name Mase Effect. After graduating in 2025, he remained in Baltimore, producing music from his parents’ basement and pursuing venue work. His ambition coexisted with doubts that he was college material. His first online hit, “Summer Moon,” reached listeners beyond Baltimore that summer.
In late 2025, a friend told Mason about the Music Production and Audio Recording Technology certificate at Community College of Baltimore County. He was surprised to discover the program and began considering audio-production training as a way to develop his skills.
