Sung ho Yoon
Sung-ho Yoon was a Korean American engineer who lived in Evanston, Illinois, with his wife, Eun-joo Yoon, and their children, Travis and Hana. He spoke English and Korean and expressed care through practical work, provision, and consistent presence. He became directly involved in Travis’s care after Travis was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in December 2024.
Personality and Family Life
Sung-ho was the son of Soon-ja Yoon. He and Eun-joo raised Travis and Hana in Evanston. Eun-joo worked as a registered nurse, and Sung-ho worked as an engineer.
Sung-ho was contained, precise, and more likely to communicate affection by solving a practical problem than by discussing his feelings. He worked long hours, funded Travis’s violin lessons, and maintained the household systems that allowed both children to pursue their interests. His engineering background shaped how he organized information and approached logistics, although it did not make him emotionally detached from his family.
His marriage to Eun-joo relied on shared work and mutual provision. Travis’s illness strained that partnership because Sung-ho and Eun-joo grieved differently while continuing to manage treatment, the household, and Hana’s needs. They remained responsible to each other even when grief made direct emotional communication difficult.
Travis’s Illness and Death

Sung-ho took emergency leave and traveled to New York during Travis’s initial hospitalization. Eun-joo managed clinical advocacy and treatment coordination, while Sung-ho handled insurance, short-term housing, communication with Juilliard, and Travis’s medical-withdrawal paperwork. He and Eun-joo shared household responsibilities and supported Hana throughout treatment.
After Travis completed induction treatment, Sung-ho drove him home to Evanston with Eun-joo seated beside him in the back seat and a thermos of Soon-ja’s juk packed for the trip. The inability to solve or control Travis’s leukemia left Sung-ho with a sustained sense of helplessness despite the practical work he continued to perform. He was present with the family when Travis died in August 2025, and his grief remained private and profound afterward.
After Travis’s death, Sung-ho also remained responsible for parenting Hana through the loss of her brother. His grief therefore existed alongside the continuing work of making sure his surviving child still had an available father, even when he could not easily speak about his own loss.
Relationship with Ezra Cruz
Main article: Ezra Cruz and Yoon Family
Ezra Cruz first entered Sung-ho’s awareness as Travis’s Juilliard roommate and then as the young man who remained beside Travis throughout induction treatment. Sung-ho initially reserved judgment while he observed Ezra’s hospital presence, daily calls, and continuing commitment. His caution reflected his need to know that the relationship surrounding his seriously ill son was dependable.
Ezra visited the Yoon family in Evanston during spring 2025 and spent extended time there during the summer. By then, Sung-ho had accepted him as part of the household. He expressed that acceptance through practical inclusion, including handing Ezra coffee and involving him in the family’s daily logistics rather than making a formal declaration.
The family maintained its relationship with Ezra after Travis’s death. Sung-ho attended Ezra’s wedding to Nina Cruz with Eun-joo and Hana.
