Eugene Wilson

Eugene “Gene” Wilson was a Black American jazz musician and longtime regular at The Session in Manhattan’s West Village. He had played with Miles Davis in the 1960s. Decades later, his musical judgment carried particular weight for Charlie Rivera and other musicians at the club.

Career and Role at The Session

By 2026, Gene was an established member of The Session’s community and occupied his usual seat near the back of the club.

Gene had known Charlie since Charlie was younger. When Charlie and Jacob Keller performed music associated with Miles Davis, Gene listened from his table and said, “There it is” before the room began applauding. During Charlie’s subsequent low-blood-sugar episode, Gene helped redirect the room’s attention while Vera Ferrara and Reggie made sure Charlie ate.

Relationships

Charlie Rivera

Gene greeted Charlie with longstanding familiarity and held him to a demanding musical standard. After an audience member requested Miles Davis and Charlie joked about needing a transition, Gene answered, “Earn it.” Charlie later treated Gene’s approval as a meaningful measure of the performance.

Logan Weston

When Charlie introduced Logan Weston at The Session, Gene looked over Logan’s posture and hands before telling him, “Relax, brother.” Logan laughed, exhaled, and relaxed his shoulders.

Jacob Keller

Gene and Jacob already knew one another by Logan’s first visit to The Session. Gene acknowledged Jacob with a tip of his chin and called him “Piano”; Jacob returned the greeting with a nod.

Physical Characteristics

Gene was an older Black man. During Logan’s first visit to The Session, he wore a well-tailored suit and moved with deliberate economy. He greeted Charlie by tapping two fingers against his cheek.
