Tre Martin

Tre Xavier Martin was a Black American former United States Marine Corps sergeant from West Baltimore. He served from 2020 until his formal medical retirement in 2027, became a Reconnaissance-qualified Marine, and belonged to The Survivors, a group of five childhood friends who experienced police violence while helping MJ Henderson during a June 2019 mental health crisis. In November 2026, Tre saved an estimated thirty to thirty-five service members during a catastrophic training incident at Camp Pendleton and sustained career-ending injuries.

Early Life and The Survivors

Tre was born in Baltimore on January 17, 2002, to Angela “Angie” Martin and Isaiah Martin. He grew up in West Baltimore with his younger sister, Tiffany, and childhood friends Marcus Henderson, Kevin Williams, Darnell Taylor, and Jamal Thompson.

Tre was five feet eleven inches tall by age twelve and later reached six feet five inches and approximately 270 pounds. He ran track in high school and was consistently the fastest runner in his events despite being much larger than the other competitors. He graduated in 2020 and enlisted in the Marine Corps shortly afterward.

The group spent substantial time at the West Baltimore Recreation Center. During the summer 2014 crisis, Tre and the other boys challenged volunteers who had excluded MJ from activities. Tre confronted the volunteer who assaulted MJ and refused to leave MJ after the assault. His father handled puberty questions indirectly by giving him a book and telling him to read it; the deodorant Isaiah bought him became a source of teasing among the boys because it smelled, in their assessment, like an old man.

June 2019 Police Violence Incident

On June 15, 2019, Tre and his friends attempted to help MJ during a mental health crisis on a West Baltimore rooftop. Marcus had carried a knife onto the roof, but he dropped it when his friends pleaded with him. After Marcus was unarmed, Officer Rodriguez fired a warning shot and pointed his weapon at Kevin, who was sixteen, unarmed, and trying to remain with Marcus. Tre and Darnell pulled Kevin out of the line of fire.

Video of the incident received approximately 6.8 million views and prompted community criticism of the police response. The experience influenced Tre’s later decision to pursue military service.

Military Service

Tre enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 2020 and attended recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. He was the fastest runner in his training cycle despite his size. Senior Drill Instructor Gunnery Sergeant Reyes recognized the anger Tre carried from the 2019 police encounter and helped him channel it into discipline and tactical work. Tre graduated recruit training and was promoted to private first class.

Tre served in Helmand Province in July and August 2021. During a July ambush following an improvised-explosive-device detonation, he assessed enemy positions under fire, cleared a building, and carried the wounded Lance Corporal Johnson approximately 200 meters to safety. He received multiple commendations for the action. His unit left Afghanistan before the August 30 withdrawal, and the remainder of his 2021–2022 overseas service occurred outside Afghanistan.

During helicopter underwater egress training in early 2023, Tre completed the required evolution and received instructor praise for his execution. After returning home to Baltimore, he became unresponsive on the family couch within twenty minutes and slept for approximately seventeen hours. Angie monitored his vital signs, Tiffany first alerted her to the abnormal unresponsiveness, and Isaiah remained with the family.

Tre was promoted to corporal in 2023 and sergeant in 2024. When his initial contract ended in 2024, he reenlisted for four more years. In early 2026, he deployed with a Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard an amphibious assault ship in the Mediterranean. During a building-clearance operation in Syria, Corporal Kyle Morrison disobeyed Tre’s tactical order and was killed by an improvised explosive device. Tre returned from the deployment in September 2026.

November 2026 Camp Pendleton Incident

During a joint training exercise at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, live ammunition was fired instead of simulated rounds. Tre pulled all twelve Marines in his squad to cover while under fire. He then ran toward a live improvised explosive device to warn another twenty to thirty personnel before it detonated.

Tre sustained gunshot wounds, blast injuries, collapsed lungs, spinal fractures, traumatic brain injury, ruptured eardrums, and other injuries. He experienced two cardiac arrests during medical evacuation and received twenty-two units of blood products during emergency treatment. His actions saved an estimated thirty to thirty-five service members.

Health and Disabilities

The Camp Pendleton injuries caused an incomplete spinal cord injury affecting Tre’s lower extremities, chronic pain, permanent hearing loss, and traumatic brain injury with ongoing cognitive symptoms. As of late 2026, he was recovering at Naval Medical Center San Diego and had entered the disability-evaluation and medical-retirement process. He received a formal medical retirement from the Marine Corps in 2027.

Physical Characteristics

Tre stood six feet five inches tall and weighed approximately 270 pounds as an adult. He was already nearly six feet tall at twelve.

Tre was quiet, observant, and comfortable with extended silence. He noticed body language, tension, and practical needs and often offered help before being asked. Military service intensified his tendency to compartmentalize distress. When he finally felt safe enough to sleep, he could become unresponsive to ordinary sounds and voices, a pattern his family described as looking medical rather than restful.

Family and Core Relationships

Angie was Tre’s mother and a nurse. Isaiah was his father. Tiffany was his younger sister and was approximately twelve during the family’s response to his post-BRC sleep.

Tre remained closely connected to Kevin, Darnell, MJ, and Jamal. All four traveled to California after his November 2026 injuries, and members of Tre’s Marine squad maintained a hospital vigil.
