Peter Liu

Peter Han Liu was a Chinese-American upright and electric bassist from Queens, New York City. He studied at LaGuardia High School, Juilliard’s Pre-College Division, and Juilliard before becoming a member of Charlie Rivera and the Band. Peter later married Korean-American sound artist and audio engineer Sophie Liu, with whom he had a daughter, Ellie Liu.

Early Life and Education

Peter was born in Queens on December 27, 2007, and was raised by Chinese immigrant parents David and Grace Liu. They remained part of his life through youth and early adulthood and died when Peter was in his forties or fifties. He spoke English and Mandarin and began studying bass during childhood.

Peter attended LaGuardia High School, where he played in Nelson Taveras’s jazz ensemble with Charlie Rivera. He also attended Juilliard’s Pre-College Division. Peter and Charlie began dating when they were approximately fifteen and remained together until they were approximately seventeen.

Peter later enrolled in Juilliard’s Bachelor of Music program in Bass Performance with the musicians who formed Charlie Rivera and the Band. He graduated with the Class of 2029. During his college years, he shared a Brooklyn apartment with Riley Mercer and Ezra Cruz.

Peter described his sexuality as bisexual or pansexual without choosing a narrower label between the two.

Musical Career

Peter played both upright and electric bass. His calm timing and restrained playing made him a stabilizing presence within Charlie Rivera and the Band. He performed on the band’s recordings and tours and maintained his professional connection to Charlie, Ezra, Riley, and Jacob Keller after their student years.

As a co-founder of Fifth Bar Collective, Peter worked as a sound engineer and producer, anchored documentary work for Fifth Bar Films, and collaborated with Riley on sound design and accessible editing for Fifth Bar Multimedia. He and Riley co-hosted the multimedia division’s ‘’Soft-Spoken’’ podcast. Peter also taught production and sound design through Fifth Bar Access and Education and served as financial director for Charlie Rivera Rising Notes Camp.

Peter also handled practical touring responsibilities. He was the smoothest driver among the band members, which made him the preferred driver when Charlie’s motion sickness or fatigue made a rough ride especially difficult.

Physical Characteristics

Peter stood approximately five feet ten inches tall and had a lean build. He had straight black hair and dark eyes. His fingers developed calluses from playing upright and electric bass.

Personality and Communication

Peter was quiet, grounded, thoughtful, and dryly funny. He did not seek attention, but he remained alert to the needs of the people around him and responded to crises with practical action. His steady manner often balanced the more outwardly expressive personalities in the band.

Peter was particularly attentive to Charlie’s health. During their teenage relationship, he stayed with Charlie when he needed to sleep after rehearsals and cared for him when he became sick. After Charlie’s suicide attempt at sixteen, Peter’s usual composure broke; he became physically ill from panic and collapsed crying with Reina Rivera, praying and whispering in Chinese.

Family and Core Relationships

David and Grace Liu

David and Grace supported Peter’s musical education and welcomed the chosen family he built through Charlie and the band. Grace and Reina Rivera became friends while Peter and Charlie were dating, and their friendship continued after the boys’ romantic relationship ended.

Charlie Rivera

Peter and Charlie’s teenage romantic relationship ended quietly and amicably. Their affection continued as friendship, chosen family, and musical partnership. Peter supported Charlie during periods of illness and later accepted Logan Weston without jealousy, caring primarily that Logan understood Charlie’s needs and treated him well.

Sophie Liu

Peter later built a relationship with Sophie Liu (née Park), a Korean-American sound artist and audio engineer. Their shared comfort with quiet and their overlapping work in music supported a long-term partnership. They married and established a home in the New York City area.

Ellie Liu

Peter and Sophie’s daughter, Eloise “Ellie” Ji Liu, was born around 2035. Ellie grew up within the extended family surrounding the band and developed an interest in sound and music.

Cultural Identity

Peter was Chinese-American and grew up in a Mandarin-speaking immigrant household in Queens. Mandarin remained part of his family life and surfaced during moments of intense emotion. His musical education and adult career developed within New York City’s classical and jazz communities.
