Michelle Medina
Michelle Anaise Medina (née Rodriguez), known to her husband as Chelly, was a Puerto Rican stay-at-home mother who lived with Cisco Medina and their son, Miguel Ángel, in the carriage house behind the Brooklyn band house. Her gentle and affectionate manner was paired with firm boundaries that people sometimes underestimated.
Early Life and Background
Michelle was born and raised in Florida as the eldest of four children in a Puerto Rican family. Her parents’ marriage ended after her mother’s infidelity when Michelle was in her early teens. Michelle remained with her father, Héctor Rodriguez, while her siblings were divided between their parents.
Héctor called her ‘’princessita’‘. He lived with untreated depression, and Michelle took on substantial responsibility for supporting him. He remained in Florida; they spoke regularly and Michelle visited. She also remained in contact with her mother, though their attempts to reconnect were uneven and the relationship was less close. Michelle was bullied about her weight during childhood and adolescence.
Before the birth of Miguel Ángel, Michelle worked in administrative and office roles. She later chose to stay home with her son and found fulfillment in raising him and running their household; the decision was not a fallback from work she wanted to keep doing.
Personality and Communication
Michelle was warm, affectionate, and soft-spoken without being passive. She listened closely, offered physical affection readily, and enforced boundaries without needing to raise her voice. When anxious, she fidgeted with her hair, collarbone, or wedding ring; Cisco could often tell her stress by how quickly she turned the ring. When angry, her smile disappeared, her jaw tightened, and she pressed her lips together.
She spoke English and heritage Spanish fluently and moved between them naturally, sometimes within a sentence. Spanish was especially common with Cisco, Claudia, and Miguel Ángel; with Claudia she often used it by default. Her voice had a warm, low register that became quieter and more contained when she was upset. Cisco recognized the use of his full name, ‘’Francisco’‘, as a sign that an argument was over.
Cultural Identity and Heritage
Michelle was Florida-raised and Puerto Rican. Her cultural life was expressed through bilingual family relationships, food, and the domestic traditions she shared with Cisco and Claudia.
Health and Disability
Michelle was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome and hypothyroidism in her late teens. Hypertension developed during her difficult pregnancy and resolved after delivery. Her endometriosis was treated with a hysterectomy after Miguel Ángel’s birth. Mild hypertension returned as she aged and required medication and monitoring.
Relationship to Her Body
Michelle’s experiences with weight-based bullying shaped her relationship with cultural expectations around appearance, but she developed a presentation centered on her own comfort rather than those expectations. She had been called ‘’gorda’’ and other names as a girl, and rapid weight changes after her PCOS and hypothyroidism diagnoses made that scrutiny harder to escape.
Her reproductive and endocrine conditions contributed to fatigue, pain, weight changes, and a complicated relationship with her body. She had stretch marks across her hips, belly, and breasts, and a low abdominal scar from her hysterectomy. Over the course of her relationship with Cisco, she became more comfortable with these marks and her full-figured build. His consistent affection mattered to her without making that change sudden or complete.
Physical Characteristics and Style
Michelle was petite and full-figured, with fair skin with light olive undertones, a round face, deep dimples, light brown hazel eyes with amber notes, and thick black hair with a wavy-to-curly texture. Miguel Ángel inherited her dimples. In Florida her skin deepened in the sun; Brooklyn winters brought out its olive undertone. She wore her hair clipped up on busy days, sometimes defined the curls after a full wash, and sometimes left it under a silk bonnet well into the day when Miguel Ángel had kept her awake.
Her everyday clothing favored leggings, soft sweaters, oversized shirts, and other comfortable pieces suited to caring for a young child; she dressed up for band events, dinners, and dates with Cisco. She regularly used Bath & Body Works vanilla-scented lotion, body wash, and mist, spraying the mist on her wrists and neck.
Family and Core Relationships
Francisco Medina
Main article: Francisco Medina and Michelle Medina
Cisco was Michelle’s husband. They met through a mutual friend; the details of the introduction were not preserved. He called her ‘’Chelly’‘, while she used ‘’Francisco’’ when she needed his full attention. Their relationship began around 2016, and they married around 2022. Cisco helped Michelle become more comfortable with her body through consistent affection, while Michelle was one of the people most able to help him rest after demanding security work.
Miguel Ángel Medina
Miguel Ángel, born around 2030, was Michelle and Cisco’s only child. Michelle’s pregnancy was medically difficult, and the hysterectomy after his birth meant she would not have additional children. She raised him bilingually in the carriage house, sitting on the floor to play with him and reading favored books to him repeatedly.
Claudia and Sofia Medina
Michelle developed a close maternal bond with Claudia Colón de Medina. Claudia shared family recipes with her, and Michelle treated her as a trusted mother figure. Michelle also formed an affectionate relationship with Cisco’s sister, Sofia Medina. She learned Sofia’s communication and fatigue signals, including the differences among her tired, genuinely upset, and overwhelmed cries. She helped preserve Sofia’s medication, CPAP, nap, and hair-care routines during visits and became one of the people Sofia asked to stay during illness. Michelle later joined Sofia’s chosen Project Haven alert circle at both residences.
Relationships with the Band Household
Michelle and Miguel Ángel were part of the extended household surrounding CRATB. She called Charlie Rivera ‘’Carlitos’’ and cared for Ezra Cruz as family, with affection that could coexist with exasperation at him. She prepared food that Cisco could use to persuade Ezra to eat; she knew mustard on a turkey sandwich helped. Ezra provided extensive medical coverage for the Medina family and established a trust fund for Miguel Ángel.
