Carla Eckert

Carla Eckert was a New York City mother whose brief encounter with Jacob Keller led to later connections with Ava Keller and Ava’s speech-language pathology work. While very pregnant and traveling with her toddler son, Landon, Carla received Jacob’s seat on a crowded subway train and then helped him through a severe migraine outside the station. A few months later, she brought Landon to Ava for evaluation of an expressive-language delay.

After seeing him stumble when he left the train, Carla followed, offered him cold water, read his phone note explaining his communication and access needs, and waited nearby without crowding him.

Carla later described the encounter in the NYC Moms & Community Network Facebook group. After other members identified Jacob, she defended him against public descriptions of him as cold or difficult.
