Carla Eckert

Carla Eckert was a New York City mother whose brief encounter with Jacob Keller led to later connections with Ava Keller and Ava’s speech-language pathology work. While very pregnant and traveling with her toddler son, Landon, Carla received Jacob’s seat on a crowded subway train and then helped him through a severe migraine outside the station. A few months later, she brought Landon to Ava for evaluation of an expressive-language delay.

Family and Core Relationships

Carla was married and had two children, Landon and Melanie. Landon was nearly two when he was referred to Ava for speech-language evaluation; Melanie was an infant at the time of the intake.

Landon Eckert

Carla sought evaluation after noticing that Landon understood spoken language but had produced only a few consonants.

Melanie Eckert

Melanie was Carla’s younger child. Carla was very pregnant with her during the subway encounter and later brought her, as an infant, to Landon’s initial appointment.

Jacob Keller

Carla boarded a crowded uptown 4 train with toddler Landon in a stroller. Jacob, already experiencing a severe migraine, gave her his seat. After seeing him stumble when he left the train, Carla followed, offered him cold water, read his phone note explaining his communication and access needs, and waited nearby without crowding him.

Carla later described the encounter in the NYC Moms & Community Network Facebook group. After other members identified Jacob, she defended him against public descriptions of him as cold or difficult.

Ava responded to Carla’s post about Jacob. A few months later, Carla unknowingly brought Landon to Ava for a speech-language evaluation. The women recognized their earlier online exchange during the appointment.
