Malik Carter

Malik Aziz Carter was a Black American lawyer from Baltimore and one of Logan Weston’s closest childhood friends. He graduated from Edgewood High School as salutatorian in 2025, completed his undergraduate education at American University, and later completed law school. Malik was a member of The Ride-or-Dies, the friend group formed during the boys’ gifted-academy years.

Early Life and Education

Malik became friends with Logan, Jordan Wells, and Mason Brooks in second grade at a gifted academy in Baltimore. James Pennington joined the group in third grade after moving from England. During Logan’s bullying years, Malik was the first of the friends to report it to school administrators and was furious when they failed to act. He also resented how much Logan had concealed before the others learned the extent of the harassment. When the group decided to leave the academy after eighth grade, Malik led the push.

At Edgewood, Malik participated in student council and debate. He was academically competitive, graduated as salutatorian, and joined Logan, Jordan, Mason, and James on Logan’s ten-day Caribbean birthday cruise in spring 2024. He joined the games and eighty-dollar karaoke bet, reacted with the group to Logan’s duet with Nia, and was part of the final-night cabin conversation after Logan’s first kiss.

At the friends’ senior-year lunch table, Malik argued basketball with Jordan and teased Logan about his scholarship work. When an exhausted Logan began explaining the neuroscience of sleep deprivation, Malik gently asked him for “plain English.” His jokes about Logan needing a nap and shutting down like a low-battery robot came from concern that Logan was running himself into the ground.

Before college, Malik worked weekend shifts waiting tables and running food at Harborline Grill, a neighborhood sports bar and grill in Baltimore, to earn money. The restaurant served families earlier in the evening and customers who stayed to watch games later. His work included serving his own tables, carrying plates between the kitchen and dining room, helping clear tables, and staying for closing cleanup. Malik was good at his job, and most of his customers rated his service highly. He continued meeting his academic, extracurricular, and work commitments despite being overworked and exhausted.

At Harborline Grill, Malik worked with Leslie, who noticed his exhaustion and appreciated his attentiveness and reliability. Her recognition mattered to him.

Malik enrolled at American University in Washington, D.C., in fall 2025. His pre-law interests included constitutional law and the interpretation of institutional power. During the friends’ final Baltimore gathering before college, he was already arguing constitutional doctrine in a pre-law group chat.

Malik completed college and law school and became a lawyer.

Personality and Communication

Malik was direct, precise, funny, and academically serious. He had a deep speaking voice. He spoke with precise diction during debate and used a looser, more colloquial register with close friends. His dialogue moved easily between technical argument, teasing, and brief practical concern. He tended to lean into arguments, gesture to punctuate a point, and pace while working through a problem. He debated politics and philosophy with Logan and challenged friends when he thought they were avoiding something important.

Malik initially distrusted Jacob Keller, believing that Jacob contacted Logan primarily when he needed help. After Jacob’s medical crisis, Malik acknowledged that he had misunderstood the situation and joined the others in offering concrete support. During an afternoon visit while Jacob was recovering at the Weston home, Malik apologized directly to him and owned the inaccuracy of his earlier judgment. Jacob replied that he was used to such treatment; Malik insisted that he should not have to be and maintained the apology. His willingness to correct his own claim reflected the precision he valued. He checked how Logan was coping, offered to bring schoolwork, and later included Jacob in the group’s ordinary teasing.

Cultural Identity and Heritage

Malik had Yoruba Nigerian heritage through his mother, Eden.

Malik was a Black American student navigating predominantly White academic institutions in Baltimore. A teacher repeatedly assumed that he had cheated, showing that academic achievement did not insulate him from racist suspicion. His casual speech with friends and his precise debate diction were parts of the same context-sensitive register.

Physical Characteristics

At eighteen, before starting at American University in 2025, Malik stood about five feet eleven inches tall. His shoulders were a little wider than his hips, with solid upper arms and some softness through his middle. He had relatively long legs and a compact torso. When seated at the kitchen table, he often hooked one foot around a chair leg; after a long shift, he settled heavily into a chair.

Malik had deep brown skin with a warm undertone. His face formed a broad oval, fullest across the cheekbones and narrowing gently toward a rounded chin. His jaw had some definition, although his cheeks retained fullness at eighteen. His nose was broad with a rounded tip, and his broad, soft mouth had full lips, with the lower lip slightly fuller than the upper. His dense, fairly straight eyebrows sat above dark brown, slightly deep-set eyes with somewhat heavy upper lids. He could raise one eyebrow independently while considering something someone had said.

Malik wore dark-framed glasses with roughly rectangular lenses and rounded corners. The frames were wide enough to fit comfortably across his face. He nudged his glasses upward with one finger while listening and took them off to rub his eyes when tired. His wide smile lifted his cheeks and showed his upper teeth; one corner of his mouth began to rise a fraction before the other. With Eden, amusement could leave him struggling to keep a straight face while he was still chewing his breakfast.

His short, dense black coils had enough length on top to feel springy beneath a palm, while the sides and back were cut closer. At eighteen, he was mostly clean-shaven, with a little uneven growth along his chin that he found annoying.

Malik generally dressed in casual, practical clothes, including hoodies. He typically snored with his mouth open and was teased about it. His snoring was louder than Logan’s usual soft, nasal snoring.

Tastes and Preferences

Malik argued basketball statistics with Jordan and played multiplayer video games with the group. His bedroom included posters of Malcolm X and James Baldwin.

Family and Core Relationships

Malik and his mother, Eden, lived with his maternal grandparents while he was growing up. Eden and his father, Cedric, were separated. Both parents and his grandparents on both sides participated in raising him.

Malik had a younger brother, Rashad, and a younger sister, Simone, both children of Eden and Cedric. He drove to his father’s house to see his paternal grandparents when they wanted to see him. During one such visit, Malik spoke little while his father engaged with his younger siblings, and he typed rapidly to a peer on his phone.

Malik was his paternal grandmother’s oldest grandchild. His paternal grandparents adored him and offered comfort and encouragement when they could. Their affection helped him feel better during visits, although he remained tired of the strained exchanges with his father.

At his father’s house, Malik shared a bedroom with Rashad. During a visit before work, his father disengaged while Malik was still speaking. Feeling low, Malik asked his grandparents whether they minded him going to lie down. They tried to lift his spirits, and he assured them that he had been working too hard and needed sleep before work. His workload had genuinely tired him, although it was not the only reason he wanted to rest. He fell asleep quickly, and his grandmother found him sound asleep and snoring softly when she checked on him.

After checking on Malik while he slept before work, his paternal grandmother remained worried about him. She returned downstairs and told his father to stop being so hard on him.

Malik’s shift that evening ran from 6 p.m. until closing. When his grandmother woke him to eat, he was still deeply asleep and responded with sleepy mumbling. He asked whether he could take the food to go so that he could spend the additional time sleeping before work.

Malik was not particularly close to his father, who interpreted Malik’s precision as unnecessary rudeness and argumentativeness. Malik tried to explain himself, but by college he had grown tired of repeatedly making that effort. His father’s misreading of his communication contributed to the distance between them.

His father’s dismissive response to his university acceptance and plans to pursue law was part of their strained relationship. Cedric also repeatedly compared Malik unfavorably with Logan. These comparisons frustrated Malik and left him feeling that he was never good enough for his father, although he did not blame Logan for Cedric’s judgments.

Malik’s close friendships were with Logan, Jordan, Mason, James, and later Jacob. During Logan’s school years, the group helped document threatening messages and supported him through bullying, academic pressure, and Jacob’s crisis.

Malik’s friendship with Logan combined debate, humor, and practical support. Their shared move to Washington for college kept them geographically close even after they stopped attending the same school.

Logan told Malik that he hated his father’s repeated comparisons between them. Malik responded with a shrug, knowing that Logan was not doing anything to cause his father’s behavior.
