Carmen Rivera

Carmen Rivera was a Puerto Rican visual artist and graphic designer born in 2007. She worked in abstract and mixed media, maintained a studio near her Brooklyn home, and contributed to the visual-arts work of the Fifth Bar Collective. Carmen was Riley Mercer’s romantic partner and shared homes with Riley in Bed-Stuy and Ocean Beach.

Early Life and Background

Carmen grew up in Ocean Beach, San Diego. She later established her primary home and professional studio in Brooklyn while retaining a home base in her former neighborhood.

Career

Carmen produced abstract and mixed-media work and also worked in graphic design. Her rented studio was near the Macon Street apartment, allowing the apartment to remain a shared home rather than her primary production space. In her work with Fifth Bar Multimedia, Carmen led the visual-arts side of projects she developed with Riley.

At Fifth Bar Gallery, Carmen and Riley helped vet the lead curator and curatorial team. Carmen also contributed to the gallery’s visual direction and the broader Fifth Bar Collective’s design work.

Cultural Identity and Heritage

Carmen was Puerto Rican and bilingual in Spanish and English. Her roots were in San Diego rather than New York, so she was not described as Nuyorican.
