Francisco Medina

Francisco Ángel Medina Colón, known as Cisco, was a Puerto Rican security professional based in New York. He led Ezra Cruz’s security detail and later served as Head of Security for the Fifth Bar Collective. He lived with his wife, Michelle, and their son, Miguel Ángel, at the Medina Carriage House. His mother, Claudia, and younger sister, Sofia, lived elsewhere in the New York City area and remained central to his family life.

Early Life and Migration

Francisco was born in Puerto Rico circa 1989–1990 to Claudia Colón de Medina and Miguel Francisco Medina Torres. Sofia, who had Down syndrome, was approximately ten years younger.

Miguel died in gang- and drug-related violence circa 2005–2006, when Francisco was sixteen. Miguel’s involvement in the drug trade had helped support the family; after his death, Claudia feared Francisco could be drawn into the same world. Francisco had lost several close friends to gang violence and wanted no part of the trade. He left Puerto Rico at twenty-one, circa 2010–2011, to survive and spare his mother another loss. He loved and missed the island even as he understood the danger of staying. Claudia and Sofia joined him in New York circa 2012–2014 after he had built enough stability for them to relocate.

The move gave Sofia access to speech therapy, occupational therapy, special education, and communication support. Francisco remained closely involved with both his mother and sister after their relocation.

Career

Marisol Cruz hired Francisco to lead Ezra’s personal security around 2028. He managed the detail’s staffing, procedures, travel preparation, and coordination with venues and local security teams. His written security protocol documented Ezra’s behavioral patterns, medical risks, and expectations for the team.

Francisco was in New York rather than on duty when Ezra experienced a near-fatal overdose while touring in Berlin in early 2035. He participated in the response from New York and later helped restructure the detail. In August 2035, Jared Dawkins and Manuel Torres became part of the reconstituted team under his leadership.

Francisco later became Head of Security for the Fifth Bar Collective, with responsibility for campus safety and artist protection.

At Freddie Diaz’s first band-house meeting with Ezra in mid-2035, Francisco received Freddie at the door and assessed him before admitting him. Freddie answered his greeting in Spanish. As Freddie remained in Ezra’s professional life, he and Francisco developed a warmer shorthand as the two long-serving members of Ezra’s surrounding team.

Personality and Communication

Francisco communicated directly and maintained a controlled professional manner during security work. He watched rooms without posturing or escalating a situation. Off duty, his humor was dry and precisely timed; Ezra had joked that Francisco’s wit earned him a place on the payroll alongside his security work. He moved easily between his native Puerto Rican Spanish and fluent English.

Health and Access

Years of security work left Francisco with cumulative pain in his shoulders, neck, lower back, and knee. Long periods of standing and physical readiness intensified the pain.

Relationship to His Body

Francisco rarely admitted the extent of his pain while awake. On the worst nights, Michelle heard a sound in his sleep that was half groan and half sob and recognized what he had carried without naming.

At home, massage, deep sleep, quiet, and practical care gave his body periods in which it no longer had to remain on alert. His reluctance to disclose pain reflected his own history and professional habits rather than a universal Puerto Rican or Caribbean response to illness.

Family and Core Relationships

Claudia and Sofia Medina

Francisco helped Claudia and Sofia relocate from Puerto Rico to New York. He remained part of Sofia’s support network, maintained a fund for her medical needs, paid for companion coverage when Claudia needed to leave the house, and knew her communication patterns, fatigue signals, medication and CPAP routines, and need for familiar structure. During visits, Sofia often shadowed him and had difficulty with departures; their goodbye ritual moved from her forehead to both cheeks and ended with a kiss on her nose that could make her laugh through tears. Although he knew the differences among her familiar cries, every version still made him flinch because the sound had struck the same protective nerve since childhood.

Their bond had helped shape Francisco’s adult life around making enough stability to hold his family. Sofia’s access to communication, care, friendship, and belonging affirmed for him that leaving Puerto Rico and rebuilding had been worthwhile. When she was ill or exhausted and needed to be held, his cupped palm covered much of the flatter back of her head, a familiar physical detail of supporting his sister.

He and Claudia also carried a largely unspoken fear of later dementia and associated late-onset myoclonic epilepsy in Down syndrome, or LOMEDS, and what the loss of Sofia’s hard-earned skills would mean. Neither was part of her mid-thirties health picture; the concern existed alongside her current life and her separate, treated epilepsy.

Later, Francisco joined Claudia and Michelle in Sofia’s chosen alert circle for Project Haven. The system served both the home Sofia shared with Claudia and the carriage-house guest room, allowing family support to follow her between the two places without making the carriage house her primary residence.

Michelle and Miguel Ángel Medina

Francisco’s relationship with Michelle Anaise Rodriguez Medina began around 2016, and they married around 2022. Their son, Miguel Ángel Medina, was born circa 2030. Francisco, Michelle, and Miguel Ángel lived in the Medina carriage house on the Band House property. Claudia and Sofia lived elsewhere in the New York City area and regularly stayed with them as guests.

Francisco’s professional relationship with Ezra began when he was hired to lead Ezra’s security. Years of travel, crisis response, and daily coordination developed into a close chosen-family relationship alongside their continuing professional roles.

Devyn Sullivan

Devyn and Francisco coordinated Ezra’s practical support while retaining their distinct responsibilities in personal operations and security. They independently used the same flat “Ezra.” to interrupt an impulsive decision. Francisco had done this for years before Devyn arrived; hearing the same response from the new assistant helped him recognize someone who belonged on the team.

Their relationship combined professional respect with dry humor. Each appreciated the other’s ability to remain steady while Ezra protested, and their separate instincts became a coordinated approach to keeping him safe and functional.
