Evie Dorsey

Evelyn “Evie” Dorsey was a Black American woman who lived in Baltimore with her husband, Theodore “Teddy” Dorsey. She was the mother of Rochelle Russell, the maternal grandmother of Diana Washington and Levi Russell, and the great-grandmother of Marcus Levi Washington III. Evie and Teddy helped Rochelle care for Levi at home and remained part of Diana’s life after the deaths of her parents and brother.

Family Life and Caregiving

Evie and Teddy raised their daughter Rochelle in Baltimore. Within the family, Teddy was remembered for his garden and Evie for keeping the kitchen.

When Levi was born with significant disabilities in 1974, Rochelle rejected a recommendation to place him in an institution. Evie and Teddy provided practical help and a second home, allowing Rochelle and Chris to continue caring for Levi within the family.

Relationship with Diana Washington

Evie and Teddy remained close to Diana after Levi died around 1992, Chris died around 1993, and Rochelle died later in the decade. They supported Diana through those losses but did not raise her during that period because she was already an adult.

Evie and Teddy later knew Diana’s son, Marcus III, who was born in 1997. Both died while he was young and before Diana’s death in 2010.
