Amber Makani

Amber Makani (born Amber Watson on February 16, 2034) was the daughter of Elise Makani and Mike Watson, the chosen daughter of Mo Makani, Jace’s older sister, and Alika’s older half-sister. She witnessed Mike Watson’s October 2045 assault on Jace, called 911 during his resulting seizure, and later changed her surname to Makani. In February 2050, her family celebrated her sixteenth birthday on Oʻahu.

Early Life and Background

Amber grew up in Baltimore in a household affected by Mike’s emotional and physical abuse. During a court-ordered visit on October 18, 2045, Mike slapped Amber after she challenged his racist and fatphobic remarks about Mo. Jace intervened and sustained a catastrophic brain injury when Mike pushed him down the porch steps. Amber called 911 while Jace seized.

Personality

Amber acted decisively during the October 2045 assault by calling emergency services while Jace seized. She remained protective of Jace and openly defended Mo when Mike targeted him with racist and fatphobic remarks.

Cultural Identity and Heritage

Amber was White American, with German-Scandinavian heritage through her mother. She became part of Mo’s extended family through a hānai father-daughter relationship and participated in family practices through Mo and his Oʻahu relatives. This kinship did not give her Native Hawaiian ancestry.

In February 2050, Mo’s family hosted Amber’s Sweet Sixteen celebration on Oʻahu. The gathering combined an American Sweet Sixteen with Hawaiian family traditions.
