David McMillan

David McMillan was a school friend of Elliot Landry in Pine Hollow, Alabama who remained in touch with him as an adult. During years when Elliot experienced bullying, social isolation, and abuse at home, David treated him without commenting on his food, movement, body, or stutter and did not make him feel burdensome. David later moved to Georgia, became an electrician, and owned a successful electrical company.

Early Life and Career

David grew up in Pine Hollow and attended school with Elliot. In adulthood, he lived in Georgia and worked as an electrician. He built a successful company of his own.

Personality

David offered Elliot quiet, consistent company. He treated him as a friend rather than as a curiosity or a problem and remained present during periods when Sean’s abuse was especially severe. His care was practical: when he knew Elliot had not eaten, he took him to McDonald’s. He spent time with Elliot after Sean broke his wrist.

Main article: Elliot Landry and David McMillan

David and Elliot knew each other through school in Pine Hollow. David was the high-school friend who stayed with Elliot when others pulled away. His companionship was one of the limited sources of acceptance available to Elliot during childhood.

Their contact continued after they grew up, although they did not speak every day. During Elliot’s serious illness, months could pass with little more than a thumbs-up, a meme, or a brief wish for a less difficult day. The distance in their exchanges did not mean David had stopped thinking about him.
