Catherine Hargreaves

Catherine “Katie” Mairead Hargreaves is a pansexual, autistic writer and the daughter of Alastair Hargreaves and Siobhan Hargreaves. She and her identical twin, Charlotte Hargreaves, were born in April 2007 while their family lived in the Boston area. The family relocated to Maryland in summer 2019, when the twins were twelve. Catherine later chose Smith College and wrote fiction and nonfiction, particularly essays and blog work about disability, discrimination, and LGBTQ+ experience.

Early Life and Family

Catherine and Charlotte were born after Alastair and Siobhan moved from England to the Boston area in late 2006. Late in the pregnancy, Siobhan developed preeclampsia with severe features. Their parents had met Patrick O’Shea and Eileen O’Shea during the transatlantic flight. When the Hargreaveses’ intended rental failed, they remained with the O’Sheas and moved into the family’s renovated basement apartment. The apartment was Catherine’s and Charlotte’s first home. Their father was English, and their mother was Irish and originally from Dublin. Catherine’s middle name, Mairead, honored her maternal grandmother.

Siobhan brought acting, voice work, Irish family stories, bold color, and direct emotional expression into the household. She and Alastair raised the twins within the same academic and performing-arts life while responding to Catherine and Charlotte as separate people rather than treating identical appearance as identical temperament.

Catherine learned British Sign Language as ordinary family communication with Alastair.

As she approached college, Catherine wanted space to develop outside constant comparison with Charlotte. She chose Smith College over Barnard for that independence.

Personality and Interests

Catherine was more reserved than Charlotte but no less perceptive. She shared Alastair’s interest in writing and tended toward a no-nonsense directness when she encountered dishonesty or pretense. Her quieter presentation did not make her passive; she was willing to say plainly when something was wrong.

Charlotte’s early-morning exuberance and commitment to theatre contrasted with Catherine’s quieter, drier manner. The sisters remained close even as they pursued different forms of work and expression.

During Alastair’s February 2011 hospitalization, three-year-old Catherine and Charlotte remained in the care of Lily O’Shea while Siobhan stayed at the hospital. Alastair returned to his Harvard career after recovering, and the family remained in the Boston area until summer 2019.

Health and Identity

Catherine, like Alastair, was autistic. She came to understand the connection during adolescence and later wrote about the delay in recognizing autism in girls and women.

Friends and Chosen Family

Catherine knew Logan Weston through James Pennington, Charlotte’s partner and one of Logan’s closest friends. She and Logan got along easily. When Logan and Charlie Rivera became a couple, Catherine quickly took to Charlie’s energy, teasing that he was the male version of Charlotte. Their friendship became part of the wider Hargreaves and Weston–Rivera family circle.
