Flight to Boston (Late 2006)

The Hargreaves family flight to Boston was Alastair Hargreaves and Siobhan’s late-2006 relocation from England to Massachusetts before Alastair began teaching at Harvard University in fall 2007. Siobhan was eighteen weeks pregnant with Charlotte and Catherine. During the transatlantic flight, the couple met Boston residents Patrick O’Shea and Eileen O’Shea, whose practical help at the airport developed into a lasting chosen-family bond.

Departure from England

Alastair and Siobhan had shipped most of their belongings before the flight. The approaching move caused repeated overload and meltdowns for Alastair, who spent their final night in Oxford sleeping only in fragments and crying over the departure. His mother offered to drive them to Heathrow, but he declined because he did not believe he could manage the goodbye while remaining regulated enough to travel.

The next morning, Alastair and Siobhan took a cab from Oxford to Heathrow. Alastair used his wheelchair in the airport, with Siobhan pushing despite his guilt that she was still caring for him during a twin pregnancy. They completed check-in, security, and boarding together.

Meeting Patrick and Eileen

Patrick and Eileen were Boston residents returning from a visit with relatives in England. They met the Hargreaveses aboard the flight, where Alastair was exhausted, anxious, and struggling with the transition while Siobhan slept beside him. The older couple spoke to him without pressing him to perform calm. Eileen gave him a butterscotch candy “for the nerves,” which he ate slowly while watching over his sleeping wife.

The conversation continued through the flight. Patrick and Eileen learned that the younger couple was relocating rather than visiting and that Alastair would eventually join Harvard’s faculty. Their reassurance gave the Hargreaveses their first sense that Boston might contain support rather than only unfamiliarity.

Arrival in Boston

After landing at Boston Logan International Airport, Alastair was too exhausted to manage the transfer and onward journey independently. Siobhan was uncertain about placing his wheelchair in a cab. Patrick and Eileen offered their accessible van, which had room for the chair and proper tie-downs, and Patrick helped Alastair transfer and settle safely.

The couples stopped for fresh bagels on the drive. Eileen then invited Alastair and Siobhan to spend their first night in the United States at the O’Shea home rather than arrive exhausted at an unfamiliar rental. Siobhan asked Alastair privately, and he accepted as long as the O’Sheas did not mind. Patrick answered that there was no sense in being strangers on their first night in a new country.

The O’Shea Home

The first night became a longer stay when problems with the Hargreaveses’ intended rental prevented them from moving in. Patrick and Eileen kept the younger couple in their home through Siobhan’s pregnancy. When the rental ultimately fell through, the Hargreaveses moved into the comfortable two-bedroom apartment that the O’Sheas had created in their renovated basement. Alastair insisted on paying rent; Patrick and Eileen reluctantly accepted it.

Patrick recognized in Alastair the same instinct he had seen in his late son, Liam: both men tried to protect everyone around them from the full extent of their pain. He told Eileen this privately after the couple’s arrival. The resemblance was emotional rather than physical, but it shaped the parental tenderness with which the O’Sheas welcomed Alastair and Siobhan.

Charlotte and Catherine were born in April 2007 while their parents were living within the O’Shea household. The basement apartment remained the twins’ first home, and the connection between the two families continued after the Hargreaveses later established a separate household in the Cambridge area.

Lasting Impact

The flight began the Hargreaves family’s American life and the support structure that sustained them through pregnancy, early parenthood, and later crises. Patrick and Eileen’s immediate hospitality became an enduring family relationship. During Alastair’s February 2011 hospitalization, Eileen supported Siobhan while Lily O’Shea cared for three-year-old Charlotte and Catherine.

Alastair began teaching at Harvard in fall 2007 and remained there through the 2018–2019 academic year. The Hargreaves family stayed in Massachusetts until moving to Baltimore in summer 2019.
