Danny’s CVS Collapse at Custody Hearing (2014)

Danny’s CVS Collapse at Custody Hearing occurred during the first contested hearing in the 2013–2014 Portland Custody Battle Arc. Danny Ross attended while an active cyclic vomiting syndrome flare was worsening. After vomiting during the proceeding, he became dizzy, lost consciousness, and required hospital treatment. The court adjourned the hearing rather than deciding the guardianship during his medical crisis.

Hearing

David and Dana opposed Danny’s petition to become Darren’s guardian. They argued that Danny’s age, limited income, chronic illness, and educational history made him unable to provide stable care. David repeatedly disrupted the proceeding and directed hostility toward Danny and the people supporting him.

Dr. Ryan Coleman testified about Darren’s migraine, fear, and lack of safety in the parental home. Marcus Johnson testified that Danny had already been performing the daily work of raising Darren. Darren then spoke directly to the court with David present, identifying Danny as the person who cared for him and attended his games and stating that he wanted to live with Danny because he felt unsafe in his parents’ home.

Medical Collapse

Danny vomited into a wastebasket during the hearing. David’s attorney used the visible flare to challenge Danny’s fitness, while Danny’s case emphasized that he had already cared for Darren for years while living with the same conditions and had built adult backup support into the proposed household.

Shortly after Darren spoke, Danny told his lawyer that he felt dizzy and heard rushing in his ears. He lost consciousness, fell from his chair, and struck the floor. Emergency personnel treated him in the courtroom and transferred him to the hospital. The court adjourned the proceeding.

Interim Arrangement

While Danny recovered, Darren remained based in Danny’s apartment under the approved adult supervision of Renee Johnson, who had known the brothers since birth. Marcus stayed with Darren and provided much of the daily companionship, while Renee held formal adult responsibility for the arrangement.

Guardian ad litem Marisol Vega continued interviewing and observing the brothers. Danny returned to the case after his condition stabilized. The court ultimately appointed him as Darren’s legal guardian and placed Darren in his legal custody; David and Dana’s continuing contact was supervised.
