Suchitra Panda
Suchitra “Suchi” Panda was an Odia Indian woman born approximately in 1997–1998 in Gopalpur-on-Sea, Odisha. She lived in Odisha and was the older sister of Samir Panda. She spoke Odia, Hindi, and English and coordinated Pradeep and Sunita Panda’s household and their father’s care after his heart attack and stroke while Samir completed doctoral work in Baltimore.
Family and Caregiving
Suchitra and Samir grew up in the Panda family in Gopalpur-on-Sea, Odisha. Their parents were Pradeep and Sunita Panda.
Suchitra was intelligent, but the family’s educational resources and expectations centered more heavily on Samir’s academic path. She watched his ability become apparent early and remained closely interested in his work after he left India.
During Samir’s doctoral program, Pradeep experienced a heart attack followed by a stroke. Suchitra coordinated his care and the household in Odisha while Samir remained in Baltimore. The family’s experience with remote caregiving later influenced Samir’s interest in integrated home-monitoring technology.
Suchitra arranged Pradeep’s medical appointments, managed his medications, and handled the household through his recovery. Samir sent money and called from Baltimore, often asking her for the practical details of their father’s condition.

Suchitra was Samir’s older sister and coordinated their parents’ household in Odisha. They kept in contact by phone and video, usually speaking Odia. Suchitra often gave Samir a more complete account of Pradeep’s condition before their mother joined the call.
Suchitra knew that Samir was gay and accepted him without qualification. She also navigated pointed questions and silences about his sexuality within the extended family, deflecting pressure around marriage and making space for him to live openly.
Each Raksha Bandhan, Suchitra sent Samir a new rakhi from Odisha when they could not be together. He continued wearing her thread as a tangible connection to his sister and home.
