Darnell Taylor
Darnell Taylor was a Black American police officer raised in West Baltimore by his mother, Michelle Taylor. He belonged to The Survivors, the childhood friend group whose attempt to help Marcus Henderson during a 2019 mental health crisis ended in police violence. Darnell later graduated at the top of his Baltimore Police Academy class and joined the Baltimore Police Department. His friendship with Kevin Williams became a romantic relationship on New Year’s Eve 2025/2026.
Early Life and Background
Darnell grew up with Kevin, Tre Martin, Marcus, and Jamal Thompson. Within the group, he was protective, steady during conflict, and willing to confront people who endangered or excluded his friends.

In summer 2014, Darnell and the other boys repeatedly asked volunteers at the West Baltimore Recreation Center to include Marcus in activities and provide meaningful accommodations for his disabilities. After a senior volunteer assaulted Marcus, Darnell challenged her actions, reassured Marcus that the assault was not his fault, and remained with him while adults documented the injuries and contacted his family.
June 2019 Police Violence Incident

On June 15, 2019, Darnell and his friends tried to help Marcus during a mental health crisis. After an officer fired a warning shot and pointed a service weapon at the unarmed Kevin, Darnell and Tre pulled Kevin out of the line of fire.
Nathan Weston, then a Baltimore police lieutenant, arrived after the escalation and talked Marcus down safely. The contrast between the first officer’s use of force and Nathan’s de-escalation shaped Darnell’s decision to enter law enforcement.
Education and Police Career

Darnell attended the Baltimore Police Academy and graduated at the top of his class in early 2026. His academy training included physical conditioning, constitutional law, search and seizure, defensive tactics, firearms qualification, and scenario-based exercises.
After graduation, Darnell entered field training with Officer Mike Brennan. During the February 2026 domestic-violence response, Darnell de-escalated the immediate threat after Isaac assaulted his fiancée, Shanice Mitchell, during a psychiatric crisis. Isaac released Shanice and submitted to handcuffing, and officers connected him with psychiatric evaluation.
Darnell favored de-escalation, clear communication, community engagement, and accountability. Shanice’s public account of the response received 2,341 shares and 847 comments, and the BPD commended Darnell’s actions. He also publicly defended Marcus when a commenter used the 2019 crisis to make racist and ableist claims about him.
Personality and Communication
Darnell was calm, loyal, direct, and protective. In dangerous situations, he tended to slow his speech and focus on the person at immediate risk. He could be firm without becoming aggressive and challenged friends as readily as strangers when their actions caused harm.
His everyday speech reflected West Baltimore African American English. In professional settings, he used concise observations, stated his intentions, and offered clear choices when circumstances allowed.
Cultural Identity and Personal Life
Darnell was Black American and grew up in West Baltimore. His community identity, his experience of police violence, and his later work as a Baltimore officer created an ongoing tension between justified distrust of policing and his belief that de-escalation and accountability could reduce harm.
His relationship with Kevin also placed his work in direct contact with their shared trauma. Kevin experienced severe PTSD related to the 2019 police violence, while Darnell wore the uniform associated with that trauma.

Kevin publicly supported Darnell’s attempt to practice community-centered policing. The relationship required both men to navigate Kevin’s police-related PTSD, Darnell’s profession, and their shared memory of the 2019 violence.
