Sophie Liu

Sophie Ji-hyun Liu (née Park), born March 28, 2007, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, was a Korean American ambient musician, sound designer, audio engineer, and mastering engineer. She married bassist Peter Liu and had a daughter, Eloise “Ellie” Ji Liu, around 2035.

Music and Sound Engineering

Sophie created experimental ambient music and soundscapes using synthesizers and other electronic equipment. Her engineering work included live mixing, analog mastering, audio design, and studio recording, supported by a background in classical acoustics. She became lead sound engineer and audio designer for most of Charlie Rivera and the Band’s studio catalog and select live recordings, then continued her sound-engineering work with Fifth Bar and Fifth Bar Multimedia.

Her ambient work often emphasized meditative, grounding listening environments. Within the band family, Raffie called her “Auntie Softwave” because of that work; it was a family nickname rather than a professional stage name.

Language

Sophie spoke English and Mandarin fluently and sometimes shifted between them in family conversations, particularly with Peter. Their daughter grew up hearing both parents’ languages alongside English.

Physical Characteristics

Sophie stood roughly five feet two to five feet three inches tall and was petite, with warm ivory-gold skin, a soft round face, and a crooked smile. Her hands were cool, and her voice was low and warm.
