Ikaika Makani
Ikaika Makani was a Native Hawaiian surfing instructor and cultural mentor who lived on Oʻahu. He was the younger brother of Kawika Makani and the paternal uncle of Maleko “Mo” Makani. Ikaika taught Mo and members of Mo’s hānai family about surfing, ocean safety, and Native Hawaiian cultural practice.
Early Life and Background
Ikaika grew up in Hawaiʻi and learned to surf while young. As an adult, he taught surfing and incorporated ocean safety, environmental stewardship, and cultural knowledge into his instruction.
He spoke Hawaiian, English, and Hawaiian Creole. His teaching emphasized practical observation, patience, respect for the ocean, and responsibility toward family and community.

Ikaika was one of the most influential adults in Mo’s life and taught him to surf. Their relationship continued after Mo moved to the mainland. Ikaika welcomed Mo’s wife, Elise, and her children into the extended Makani ʻohana.
Jace Makani

Ikaika began teaching Jace to surf during childhood visits to Oʻahu. After Jace sustained a traumatic brain injury in October 2045, Ikaika adapted later lessons to account for Jace’s altered balance, visual processing, spatial awareness, and fatigue. They used calmer water, shorter sessions, verbal cues, and beach-based balance practice during the family’s February 2050 visit.
Amber Makani
Ikaika welcomed Amber as part of the Makani ʻohana. Her February 2050 sixteenth-birthday celebration took place in Ikaika’s North Shore community and included surfing lessons, cultural storytelling, music, hula, and a lūʻau.

In early March 2054, Ikaika suffered a massive heart attack while surfing at the North Shore. Another surfer brought him to shore, and emergency personnel transported him to Queen’s Medical Center. He survived after critical cardiac intervention and began cardiac rehabilitation.
Mo experienced vasovagal syncope after learning about the heart attack. He and Jace flew to Hawaiʻi for the hospital vigil, where Ikaika’s recovery reversed part of the longstanding caregiving relationship between Ikaika and Mo.
