Raffie Cruz

Rafael Héctor Cruz-Navarro, known as Raffie Cruz, was a Black vocalist and composer of Puerto Rican and Jamaican-Dominican heritage. The son of Ezra Cruz and Nadia Beckford, he began releasing music as a child, studied at Berklee College of Music, and later married guitarist and composer Elías Navarro.

Early Life and Family

Raffie was born Rafael Héctor Cruz on June 9, 2035. His name honored his paternal grandfather, Rafael Cruz, and Hector Burgos, Rafael’s closest friend and chosen brother.

He grew up in a musical family and was the first child of his generation with whom Charlie Rivera formed a close bond. Charlie taught him to play drums. Raffie also learned ASL as part of the family’s communication with Charlie.

As a baby, Raffie resisted naps unless Ezra played trumpet softly in another room. Rehearsal spaces, recording studios, green rooms, and music at home were part of his early life. Raffie, Clara Keller, and Ellie Liu belonged to the same young cohort growing up among the band families.

Ezra protected Raffie’s childhood from public exposure after the unauthorized daycare photograph circulated when Raffie was eight months old. During the 2041 trampoline-park incident, a patron filmed six-year-old Raffie and tried to make him look toward her camera despite Ezra’s repeated objections. A selectively edited recording recast Ezra’s intervention as a public outburst and prompted one of his best-known statements about his children’s privacy.

The scrutiny persisted into adolescence. Before a formal gala when Raffie was sixteen, he sought Amber Makani’s opinion of his suit and grew flustered under her enthusiastic compliments. Online responses to the gala then sexualized him; other commenters intervened to remind people that he was still a child. Raffie had grown up with strangers treating both his face and his connection to Ezra as public property.

Raffie closely resembled Ezra, sharing his jawline, cheekbones, and stubborn tilt of the chin, while his darker complexion came from Nadia. As a young adult, he stood approximately five feet eleven inches tall with a lean, strong build. He had warm brown skin with golden undertones, soft hazel eyes that could look tired even when he was young, and thick curls worn longer and sometimes tied into a loose puff.

Personality and Presentation

Raffie was quiet, emotionally magnetic, and deliberate in conversation. He listened more than he spoke, used a soft voice, and chose his words carefully. He often carried a notebook or staff paper and dressed in loose button-down shirts, soft trousers, and rings on at least three fingers.

He sometimes signed when speaking felt overwhelming. With people he trusted, his reserve made room for teasing and direct affection. He apologized too readily for taking up space, collected handwritten setlists from his performances, and wrote letters in careful script that he signed “R.” At Berklee he accepted invitations selectively when he had the energy rather than treating attendance at every event as an obligation.

Within his family, Raffie called Ezra Dad or Pop and Charlie Tío. Charlie’s place in his life carried the weight of a second father: Ezra taught Raffie how to perform, while Charlie taught him how to feel through music. Raffie was affectionate with both men, sometimes falling asleep against Charlie’s shoulder or kissing either of them on the cheek when he was proud of them.

Music Career and Education

Raffie attended The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry from fifth through twelfth grade. In fall 2047, when he was twelve, he chose Logan Weston and Charlie Rivera for a classroom assignment about the people he looked up to.

At eleven, Raffie launched the YouTube music channel R.C. Sessions with Ezra, Freddie, and Riley managing the account. He chose to obscure his face in the early videos so that sharing his music did not require surrendering his privacy. He released the self-produced, self-released six-track homemade LP Early Hours in 2051, when he was sixteen. After a discussion with Ezra, he began showing his face on the channel at eighteen, on his own terms.

At sixteen, he also wrote a song for Ezra and performed it at a high-school spring concert, moving his father to tears.

Raffie attended Berklee College of Music, earning a Bachelor of Music in jazz vocal performance and composition at twenty-one. Some professors had been Ezra’s classmates, and students asked Raffie about Ezra and Charlie before hearing his own work. He met Elías there during a late-night jam session when both were approximately nineteen.

As a vocalist, Raffie paired a haunting, smoky alto with restrained delivery and long, still sustained notes. His compositions used layered harmony and often moved from melancholy toward hopeful resolution. He performed solo voice-and-piano sets and sometimes quoted family compositions within his own work. He frequently wrote in honor of his elders, including For the Man Who Stayed, a Berklee composition for Ezra, and “Rivera, in D Minor,” dedicated to Charlie with the words “For the man who let me sleep near the music.”

His Berklee senior project, Afternoon Epilogues, combined Afro-Caribbean vocal phrasing, jazz improvisation, and string-quartet accompaniment. The performance moved multiple faculty members to tears. A barefoot student showcase performance also circulated widely on jazz TikTok. Within the music scene, Raffie became known as “the Whispered Flame.”

After completing his junior year in 2056, twenty-one-year-old Raffie performed a solo voice-and-guitar tribute during Ezra’s fiftieth-birthday concert at Madison Square Garden. Billboard covered the performance under the headline “The Fire Continues.”

In early 2057, when Raffie was twenty-one, he released Inheritance, his first formal post-Berklee studio album. The album blended jazz, R&B, bachata, and neo-soul and included the father-son collaboration “Made of Ashes”.

Nadia was Raffie’s mother and maintained a close relationship with him. She and Ezra continued raising him through a co-parenting partnership after their romantic relationship ended.

Nina Cruz and Lia Cruz

Raffie treated Nina as a second mother. He was eight when his younger half-sister, Lia, was born on July 6, 2043, and he remained protective of her as she grew up.

Charlie Rivera

Charlie formed a close bond with Raffie during Raffie’s childhood. He taught Raffie drums, and their relationship continued into Raffie’s adulthood.

Raffie attended to Charlie’s access needs as well as his music. For a Berklee recital, he arranged a back-row seat, a quiet green room, and a place for Charlie to rest after the performance. At other gatherings, he joined younger members of the band family in keeping track of Charlie’s supplies and helping when Charlie needed a break.

At approximately twelve, Raffie joined Clara, Emily, and Ellie for the Bay Lights outing. He continued exploring the displays while the other children recorded and photographed them for Charlie after Charlie fell asleep.

Luna Cruz

Luna, Ezra’s younger sister, was twenty-four when Raffie was born. Titi Luna offered homework help, outings, soccer games, familiar affection, and room to be quiet without being compared with his father. Her humor and age-appropriate honesty included firm boundaries when Ezra was too permissive. She accepted Raffie’s coming out without fanfare, allowing him to remain himself without turning the conversation into a family spectacle.

When Raffie was old enough to understand, Luna trusted him with her self-harm history. Learning what her composure had concealed helped him reconsider his own tendency to hide exhaustion and avoid becoming a burden. Their bond continued into his adulthood, when he also watched for signs that she was struggling and offered care in return.

Marisol Cruz

Marisol was Raffie’s paternal grandmother in Hialeah. Visits and holidays gave them concentrated time together despite the distance. She cooked for him, spoke Spanish with him, and spoiled him without reducing him to Ezra’s son or Rafael’s namesake. She recognized traces of his grandfather in Raffie while allowing him to be himself.

Logan Weston

Raffie called Logan ‘’Tío’’ and named him alongside Charlie in his 2047 school assignment. He credited Logan with teaching him to think with both intellect and care. During Logan’s 2058 heart attack, he slept poorly, cried privately, and wrote increasingly sad music. Elías recognized the strain and helped Raffie travel to Baltimore rather than treating his own need to see family as an inconvenience.

Amber Makani

Amber Makani was one of Raffie’s closest friends and a chosen cousin within the band family. They texted constantly during adolescence despite living in different cities, exchanging memes, music, school frustrations, jokes about their fathers, and emotional check-ins. Amber’s school stress and Raffie’s experience of being Ezra’s son could be discussed without either needing to maintain a public-facing performance.

Amber enthusiastically praised his formal outfit before a gala he attended with Ezra, helping him enter the evening feeling confident and seen. Their FaceTime calls also allowed quiet parallel company. On a night when Raffie fell asleep while Amber read in bed, she kept the call open and saved a photograph privately instead of posting it or teasing him. He later sent her a sleepy voice message in Spanglish. The relationship was affectionate, non-romantic chosen-family friendship.

Romantic and Significant Relationships

Elías Navarro

Raffie met Elías Gabriel Navarro, a guitarist and composer, at Berklee when both were approximately nineteen. Their musical collaboration developed into a romantic relationship and marriage. They adopted Cruz-Navarro as their shared family name and later became the fathers of Christian Mateo Cruz-Navarro and Sebastian Gabriel Cruz-Navarro.

Memorable Quotes

“Why do you dress like a drag queen on jury duty?”

Raffie said this after Ezra asked why he dressed like a retired poet.

“Yeah, they’re family. But I’m writing my own charts now.”

Raffie answered this way when Berklee classmates asked about Ezra and Charlie rather than his own music.

“My Tío Charlie taught me to rest. My Dad taught me to roar.”

Raffie used this distinction to describe what each man gave him.
