Raffie Cruz and Charlie Rivera
Raffie Cruz and Charlie Rivera shared a chosen-family uncle-and-nephew relationship that began during Raffie’s childhood and continued until Charlie’s death in 2081.
Overview
Charlie was one of Ezra Cruz’s closest musical collaborators and chosen-family relationships through Charlie Rivera and the Band. Raffie grew up within that extended family network and became the first child of his generation with whom Charlie formed a close bond.
Raffie called Charlie ‘’Tío’‘, but Charlie’s place in his life carried the weight of a second father. In the family’s shorthand, Ezra taught Raffie how to perform, while Charlie taught him how to feel through music.
Origins and Early Relationship
Charlie was already part of Ezra’s musical family when Raffie was born in 2035. Their relationship developed through ordinary family contact and music. Charlie taught Raffie to play drums, which became one of Raffie’s principal instruments.
Raffie also learned ASL as part of his family’s communication with Charlie. ASL remained one of Raffie’s documented languages.
Dynamics and Communication
Music was the clearest documented structure of the relationship. Charlie’s drum instruction connected Raffie’s childhood musical development to the older generation of the band, while Raffie’s use of ASL supported communication across the extended family.
Their bond continued after Raffie began releasing his own music and attended Berklee College of Music.
Raffie was physically affectionate with Charlie and sometimes fell asleep against his shoulder during conversation. He also kissed Charlie on the cheek when he was proud of him.
