Jayden

Jayden was a Black American boy and Logan Weston’s Little through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Maryland. They were matched during Logan’s senior year of high school, when Logan was seventeen. Jayden was twelve by December 18, 2025. Bright, restless, and stubborn, he reminded Logan strongly of his own childhood.

School and Interests

Jayden loved science fiction, especially stories in which a person’s differences could become strengths. He read widely enough to pick up vocabulary that surprised adults. He disliked homework and resisted instructions that gave him no reason to follow them. In school, his quick questions and difficulty remaining still could be mistaken for defiance, though he wanted to understand how things worked and why rules existed. He was a middle-schooler during Logan’s high-school senior year.

Logan noticed that adults could read Jayden’s movement and questions more harshly than similar behavior from white children. He knew from his own childhood how readily a bright Black boy’s curiosity could be labeled trouble, and he did not demand that Jayden become quieter to earn patience.

Personality and Communication

Jayden was curious, funny, and sensitive beneath his stubbornness. His jokes often came from connections other people had not noticed, and he reacted strongly to unfairness. When excited, he talked quickly, interrupted himself with added details, and pursued questions beyond the first answer. He moved while he spoke and did not always look directly at someone while listening. With people who had not earned his trust, he shortened his answers, made less eye contact, and guarded the parts of himself they might dismiss.

Jayden noticed when Logan was tired or troubled, even when Logan tried to hide it. He wanted adults to take his questions seriously and feared that his intensity would eventually make them stop showing up. Logan’s repeated visits let Jayden share fears and confusion he otherwise kept behind bravado.

Mentorship with Logan Weston

Logan and Jayden met weekly for games, including puzzles and strategy games, museum visits, and conversations about science fiction and grief. Logan made the time despite his dual-enrollment courses, debate, track, diabetes care, and college applications. He answered Jayden’s questions or admitted when he did not know and looked for the answer with him. He let Jayden walk while talking because he knew the boy was still listening. Logan would tell Jayden if he was being rude without treating his movement, curiosity, or stubbornness as misconduct in themselves.

Jayden came to trust Logan and became comfortable showing the sensitivity beneath his bravado. Logan’s consistency challenged Jayden’s fear that an adult would eventually decide he was too much trouble. He did not try to make Jayden less intense or less curious, and Jayden learned that his questions could be taken seriously without having to become quieter or more compliant. Logan, in turn, was surprised by how naturally he took to mentoring Jayden.

Nathan Weston knew Jayden through Logan and had met him, but he did not know Jayden especially well or know the full private shape of Logan and Jayden’s mentorship.

The match continued the mentorship pattern that had begun when Curtis Miles became Logan’s Big Brother. Logan’s work with Jayden gave him an opportunity to provide another child with the consistency and acceptance Curtis had provided for him. Their relationship also informed the way Logan later taught and mentored others.

December 2025 Vigil

At the public vigil for Logan on December 18, 2025, twelve-year-old Jayden had not slept in days and looked haunted by his fear for Logan. His eyes were swollen, his lips dry, and he was quieter than Nathan remembered from their earlier meetings. Nathan was struck by the contrast between the exhaustion in Jayden’s face and the clarity of his speech.

Jayden described how Logan let him move while talking, answered his questions, and distinguished restlessness from rudeness. He insisted that Logan was still his Big and said he did not want him to die. Jayden asked Nathan to tell Logan to wake up and then, while Nathan held him, to tell Logan he was waiting. Nathan promised to carry that message back to Logan that night. After the service, Jayden fell asleep against the woman who had accompanied him. Nathan confirmed that they had a way home and left without waking him. Back at the hospital, Nathan told Logan that Jayden had asked him to wake up and needed him, though Nathan could not bring himself to repeat the rest of Jayden’s plea.
