Angela Martin

Angela “Angie” Martin was a Black American nurse from a working-class household in West Baltimore. She was married to Isaiah Martin and was the mother of Tre Xavier Martin and Tiffany Martin. During Tre’s recovery sleep after BRC training, she repeatedly checked his vital signs, watched how little he moved, and noticed that he had lost weight. When he woke, she questioned him about his prolonged sleep deprivation rather than accepting his initial reassurance. Her concern did not keep her from feeding him: she had made cheese grits, bacon, scrambled eggs with cheese, cornbread, and turkey sausage links because they were among his favorites.

Angie called Tre “baby” even as an adult. When his answers turned evasive, she used his middle name, Xavier, and named the physical changes she could see.
