Isaiah Martin

Isaiah Martin was a Black American father from West Baltimore. Known as Pops to his children, he was married to Angela “Angie” Martin and was the father of Tre and Tiffany. He communicated affection primarily through presence, practical help, and shared routines.

Personality and Communication

Isaiah spoke economically and was comfortable with silence. His humor was dry, from muttered basketball commentary to dad jokes that made his children groan.

He taught Tre practical skills through demonstration and participation, handing him tools while they worked on household repairs. When Tre reached puberty, Isaiah gave him a book with an embarrassing cover, told him, “Read this,” and left him to it rather than conducting a long verbal conversation. Tre hid the book beneath his mattress for three months before opening it. Isaiah also bought him deodorant whose scent Tre and his friends thought belonged to an old man.

Isaiah worried about Tre’s safety as a Black young man in Baltimore. The 2019 police encounter, in which officers drew weapons on Tre’s friends, sharpened that fear. When Tre joined the Marines, Isaiah paid close attention to the news and to changes in his son when he came home, including weight loss and guardedness. He seldom gave the worry a long explanation, but it shaped what he noticed and when he stayed close.

Habits, Routines, and Preferences

Isaiah kept up with household repairs, including leaky faucets, and showed Tre how to help rather than narrating every step. He claimed the recliner during family television nights. He liked action films and shared Tiffany’s jokes about their implausible scenes; the two of them could make Angie shush them during the emotional parts. Basketball was both a pleasure and a way to spend easy time with Tre. During a Lakers game after Tre’s Basic Reconnaissance Course, Isaiah remarked, “Kobe would’ve made that shot.” Tre argued that the game had changed, and Isaiah answered, “Still would’ve made it.”

Family and Core Relationships

Angela Martin

Isaiah and Angie raised Tre and Tiffany together. Angie tended to address concerns directly, while Isaiah observed quietly and provided steadiness. They knew how to read one another’s small changes of expression after years of parenting together. Following Tre’s catastrophic December 2026 injuries, Isaiah held Angie while his own hands shook, arranged travel from Baltimore, and went with her to San Diego to be with their son.

Tre Martin

Isaiah and Tre bonded through basketball, household repairs, and comfortable silence. Tre learned some of his practical competence and ease with shared silence from that steady participation. After Tre returned from Basic Reconnaissance Course training in early 2023 and slept for seventeen hours, Isaiah remained nearby and asked Angie, “How long since he’s had real sleep?” Later, while they watched basketball together, he encouraged Tre to see Kevin, Darnell, Marcus, and Jamal: “Good. You need that. Your boys keep you grounded.”

Tiffany Martin

Isaiah and Tiffany shared family television nights, comfortable silences, and a dry sense of humor. She was more verbal than Tre, and Isaiah laughed at the sarcastic comments she made during action films.
