Sophie Liu (Career and Legacy)
Sophie Ji-hyun Liu was an audio engineer, mastering engineer, sound designer, and ambient musician whose work included most of Charlie Rivera and the Band’s studio catalog, select live recordings, and later productions for the Fifth Bar Collective.
Career Overview
Sophie’s professional work combined live-set mixing and analog mastering with classical-acoustics training and experimental ambient sound. She worked with synthesizers and other electronic equipment in her own soundscape practice and applied the same attention to frequency, space, and low-end balance in recording and mastering.
Career Beginnings
Sophie was working as a front-of-house engineer by approximately age twenty. She met bassist Peter Liu while substituting for another engineer on a small tour engagement. Peter noticed the separate processing she had applied to his lowest string during soundcheck, and their initial technical conversation developed into a relationship.
Charlie Rivera and the Band
Sophie became the lead sound engineer and audio designer for most of CRATB’s studio recordings and selected live releases. Her work included recording and mixing the band’s live improvisation while preserving the electronic, ambient, and spatial production elements that became increasingly prominent in its later catalog.
Her engineering on the 2040 album ‘’Midnight Architecture’’ captured Riley Mercer’s electronic and ambient production within the band’s live jazz framework. In 2042, she contributed sound engineering and production to the ‘’Accessibility Remix Project’‘, which created alternate audio and visual presentations of the CRATB catalog.
Ambient and Sound-Design Work
Sophie’s independent work centered experimental ambient sound and synthesizer-based soundscapes. She used frequency, texture, and sustained sound to create meditative and grounding listening environments without treating the work as medical treatment. Her daughter, Ellie Liu, grew up around this practice and later created ambient soundscapes of her own.
Fifth Bar Collective
Sophie continued as a sound engineer within Fifth Bar. She worked with Fifth Bar Multimedia on podcasts, audiobooks, visual albums, sensory-friendly media, and alternative audio mixes, collaborating with Riley and Peter on productions that combined experimental sound with accessible presentation.
