Janine and Mason Brooks
Janine and Mason Brooks were mother and son. They were close, but her expressions of concern about his music career and her mediation of his arguments with his father contributed to Mason’s belief that she did not support him.
Overview
Mason lived with Janine and his father, William “Bill”, during high school and remained in their Baltimore home after graduating in 2025. Janine was wholeheartedly proud of Mason and his music, without making that pride conditional on his success. She loved how happy music made him. Her worries concerned how hard he might have to work for little return and how few people established a sustainable career in music.
Dynamics and Communication
Mason addressed Janine as “Mom” or “Ma” in ordinary conversation, reserving “Mama” for his most distressed moments.

Janine often mediated arguments between Mason and Bill over Mason’s decision to pursue music. Bill worked in finance and did not understand why his intelligent son would not choose a similar career. Mason defended his choice forcefully and wanted recognition for the thought, revision, and technical work his music required.
Mason sometimes interpreted Janine’s mediation as agreement with Bill. He felt that both parents opposed his DJ work, leaving him isolated at home despite his closeness with his mother. Their disagreements strengthened his determination to prove himself, alongside the enjoyment music already gave him.
During the summer 2025 “Summer Moon” phone call, Janine did not yet understand how much hurt Mason carried because he believed she did not support him at all. Learning the extent of that hurt later broke her heart. She recognized that her unconditional pride had not prevented her words and interventions from hurting him.
During the early period of building his music work, spanning senior year and the first years after graduation, Mason spent roughly a year or two avoiding going to his parents for support with setbacks or difficulties. He expected those struggles to become further arguments against his choice of career and increasingly kept them to himself at home.
Shared History and Milestones
Janine and Bill surprised Mason with Tiny as a kitten for his fourteenth birthday, after he had been asking for a cat. Tiny became particularly attached to Mason, and Janine usually looked after him when Mason was away.
Janine and Bill bought equipment for the basement where Mason began producing music. At the Weston family’s summer 2025 barbecue, Mason joked that his parents supported electricity rather than his artistic vision, even after Malik reminded him that they had bought the equipment.
When “Summer Moon” became Mason’s first online hit in summer 2025, he called Janine from his hotel room in Virginia and shared videos of listeners using and singing along to the track. Janine was proud of him, replayed a clip, and asked him to send more. Mason initially began qualifying what the attention meant, expecting to need to explain its value; Janine gave him time to share his excitement without turning the call toward money or career planning.
Mason was staying in Richmond for another night and would return home the following morning. After their call, Janine continued looking through his feed, including tags, reposts, and comments. She showed Bill the response; he listened to the track and sent Mason his own message of pride. Her pleasure in the response to Mason’s work reflected the pride she had felt in him before its wider recognition.
Janine had lasagna, garlic bread, and Caesar salad waiting when Mason returned from Richmond. Her nineteen-year-old son arrived exhausted after the wedding weekend and drive home, although he smiled at her when he came through the door.
