Eileen O'Shea

Eileen O’Shea was an Irish immigrant from County Cork who lived in Boston with her husband, Patrick O’Shea. The couple immigrated in 1968 and raised their children in the Boston area. Eileen later became a close family friend of Siobhan Hargreaves and Alastair Graham Hargreaves.

Background and Immigration

Eileen was born in County Cork around 1941. She and Patrick immigrated to Boston in 1968 and established their family there.

Marriage and Family

Eileen was thirteen years younger than Patrick. They met around 1957, when she was sixteen and he was twenty-nine, but did not begin a romantic relationship until she was nineteen. They began dating around 1960, later married, and raised children in Boston.

Their children included twins Liam and Lilian, known as Lily. Liam died in a car accident at age twenty-one. Lily survived her twin and remained part of her parents’ life.

By late 2006, Eileen and Patrick’s youngest daughter had given birth to her first baby. The O’Sheas planned to help her care for the new child after returning home from England.

Nursing Career

Eileen worked as a nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital for most of her career. Her clinical experience remained part of how she cared for family and friends after retirement; with Alastair’s permission, she assessed his nearly subluxed shoulder after a fall during the Hargreaves family’s first period in Boston.

Voice and Presentation

Eileen retained an Irish accent after decades in Boston. By the time she met the Hargreaveses, her hair was white and usually swept back in a neat clip, and she wore glasses. She could be direct and reassuring in the same conversation, offering practical help without making a spectacle of it.

Friendship with the Hargreaves Family

Eileen and Patrick met Alastair and Siobhan during a transatlantic flight to Boston in late 2006. The O’Sheas already lived in Boston and were returning from a visit with relatives in England, while Alastair and Siobhan were relocating to the Boston area during Siobhan’s twin pregnancy. Eileen helped Alastair through his flight anxiety, and the O’Sheas drove the younger couple and his wheelchair from the airport. While their husbands rested during the flight, Eileen and Siobhan shared tea and talked about Siobhan’s theater training, her wish to remain involved in acting, and her plans to stay close to the twins as they grew. They invited the Hargreaveses to spend their first night in the United States at the O’Shea home. When the intended rental failed, Eileen and Patrick extended the invitation and later rented them the home’s renovated basement apartment. Charlotte and Catherine were born while the families shared the household.

After travel, Eileen prepared a heating pad and a bath with the salts Patrick liked for his arthritis. She attended to his fatigue without treating him as incapable.

February 2011 Hospitalization

During Alastair’s February 2011 hospitalization, Eileen brought food, checked in regularly, and offered to drive Siobhan home so she could rest. Lily cared for Charlotte Hargreaves and Catherine Hargreaves while Siobhan remained at the hospital.

Memorable Quotes

“Darling, you are doing what so many people forget to: you’re building a life around love, not in spite of it. That’s no small thing.”

(To Siobhan as they discussed her plans for family and theater on the flight.)

“You don’t need anyone’s permission to love one another.”

(To Siobhan and Alastair after discussing the scrutiny of their marriages.)
