Logan Weston and Dr. Alicia Monroe - Relationship¶
Overview¶
Dr. Alicia Monroe was one of Logan's professors and mentors at Howard University, part of a faculty support network that enabled Logan to continue his pre-medical education despite traumatic brain injury, chronic pain, and ongoing recovery from the December 2025 accident. Her mentorship contributed to an environment of rigorous scholarship and supportive community that made Howard a place where Black students like Logan could pursue demanding academic goals while navigating complex medical realities.

Howard's tradition of seeing Black students as whole people—not reducing them to their academic performance or their obstacles—meant that Logan's TBI, chronic pain, and ongoing recovery were accommodated within a framework of rigorous expectation rather than lowered standards or pitying exception. Dr. Monroe could maintain high academic demands while honoring Logan's medical realities because HBCU culture already contained the concept of brilliance coexisting with struggle—a concept predominantly white institutions often struggle to hold. She didn't need to choose between rigor and compassion because Howard's institutional culture had never insisted those were opposites.
