Overview¶
The University of Maryland, College Park is the flagship institution of the University System of Maryland, a public land-grant research university enrolling more than 40,000 students across twelve colleges and schools on a 1,340-acre campus approximately forty-three minutes south of Baltimore on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. Founded in 1856 as the Maryland Agricultural College, UMD has evolved into one of the nation's leading public research universities, classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities---very high research activity" and recognized as a "Public Ivy" for combining the resources and research capacity of a major state university with academic standards that compete with private institutions. The university spent over $1.14 billion on research and development in 2021, ranking it seventeenth among American universities.
Within the Faultlines universe, UMD serves as the shared ground where three young people from Baltimore---Marcus Washington III, Devon Morgan, and Keisha Clark---arrive in the same freshman class in fall 2015 and begin testing whether the progress made during their high school years holds outside the Baltimore ecosystem that supported it. Marcus comes on a full basketball scholarship, the first in his immediate family to attend college. Devon arrives with a brain three months into the quiet of proper ADHD and depression treatment. Keisha enters the College of Education with the specific intention of becoming the school counselor she never had. The university doesn't transform them---they arrive already transformed---but it provides the credential, the structure, and the proximity that forces them to navigate each other in new ways.
Founding and Governance¶
The Maryland Agricultural College was chartered on March 6, 1856, when Charles Benedict Calvert---a future U.S. Representative and descendant of the first Lord Baltimore---purchased 420 acres of the Riversdale Mansion estate near present-day College Park. On October 5, 1859, the first 34 students entered the new institution. The school operated as a private agricultural college until the Morrill Land-Grant Acts designated it as Maryland's land-grant institution, expanding its scope and connecting it to federal support for practical education in agriculture, science, and engineering.
The university underwent several name changes and institutional reorganizations through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, eventually becoming the University of Maryland in 1920 and assuming its current identity as the flagship of the University System of Maryland. The system, established in 1988, includes twelve institutions across the state, with College Park serving as the principal research campus and the institution that carries the "University of Maryland" name most prominently in national recognition.
Governance operates through the University System of Maryland Board of Regents and the university's president, who oversees an institution that functions as both academic enterprise and economic engine for the state. The university's proximity to Washington, D.C.---College Park sits just outside the northeast border of the District---gives it access to federal research partnerships, government internships, and a policy landscape that shapes curricula across departments from political science to public health.
History¶
1856: Founding¶
Charles Benedict Calvert establishes the Maryland Agricultural College on 420 acres near College Park, creating the institution that would evolve into the state's flagship university.
1935: Murray v. Pearson¶
Donald Gaines Murray sought admission to the University of Maryland School of Law in January 1935 and was rejected solely because of his race, the rejection letter stating plainly that "The University of Maryland does not admit Negro students." Represented by Charles Hamilton Houston and a young Thurgood Marshall---for whom the case would be his first civil rights victory---Murray challenged the rejection under the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. The Baltimore City Court and later the Maryland Court of Appeals ruled that since Maryland provided only one law school, it must be available to all races. The case, though never taken to the Supreme Court and therefore not binding outside Maryland, established the legal strategy that Marshall would refine over the next two decades into the argument that won Brown v. Board of Education in 1954.
For the Faultlines universe, Murray v. Pearson matters because it places the university within a specific tradition: an institution that excluded Black students, was forced by legal action to admit them, and then spent the following decades negotiating what integration actually meant in practice rather than just policy. When Marcus Washington III walks onto the UMD campus in fall 2015 on a basketball scholarship, he enters an institution whose Black student population exists because of legal victories won eighty years earlier---a history that the campus commemorates without always reckoning with its ongoing implications.
1953: Founding Member of the Atlantic Coast Conference¶
UMD was a founding member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, competing in the ACC for over six decades and establishing the Terrapins as a recognized name in college athletics.
2002: Men's Basketball National Championship¶
The Maryland Terrapins won the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament under coach Gary Williams, defeating Indiana 64--52 in the championship game. The title cemented UMD's basketball program as nationally competitive and remains the program's defining achievement.
2014: Big Ten Conference Membership¶
UMD departed the ACC and joined the Big Ten Conference, a move driven by financial considerations and the desire for greater media revenue and research partnerships. The transition placed Maryland's athletic programs in competition with Midwestern powerhouses---Michigan, Ohio State, Wisconsin---while also connecting the university to the Big Ten Academic Alliance, a consortium of research universities that facilitates collaboration across institutions. For Marcus Washington III, arriving in 2015, UMD's Big Ten membership means his basketball career plays out against a different caliber of competition than the program he would have entered five years earlier.
Curriculum and Services¶
UMD offers over 200 degree-granting programs including 113 undergraduate majors, 107 master's programs, and 83 doctoral programs across twelve colleges and schools. The academic structure relevant to the Faultlines universe spans three distinct programs that bring Marcus, Devon, and Keisha into the same institution through different doors.
Department of Kinesiology (School of Public Health)¶
The Department of Kinesiology, housed within UMD's School of Public Health, offers undergraduate degrees in Kinesiological Sciences and Physical Education. The Kinesiology major ranks among UMD's ten largest, with approximately 774 undergraduate students. Coursework encompasses exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor learning, cognitive-motor neuroscience, and physical cultural studies---the science of human movement examined from cellular to societal levels.
Marcus Washington III enters the kinesiology program understanding bodies the way someone does who watched his mother's body fail and who has spent his life pushing his own body toward performance. The curriculum---exercise physiology, biomechanics, the science of how muscles fire and bones articulate and systems adapt---gives him language for knowledge he has carried physically since childhood. The program leads toward careers in physical therapy, athletic training, sports medicine, and exercise science, providing the academic credential that Diana's instruction---"basketball opens the door, the degree keeps it open"---demanded.
College of Education¶

The College of Education, housed in the Benjamin Building on Campus Drive, offers undergraduate and graduate programs in education, counseling, higher education, and special education. The Department of Counseling, Higher Education and Special Education provides the school counseling track that brought Keisha Clark to UMD---the program she first described to Marcus over cold pancakes at a Baltimore diner and first encountered during her January 2015 campus visit, when a second-year graduate student named Tamara walked her through the building.
Keisha's path through the education curriculum transforms "I want to help girls like me" from aspiration into professional identity. The program provides clinical frameworks, counseling theory, practicum experiences, and the credential required to become the school counselor who recognizes what Keisha's own counselors failed to see---the girl trapped inside a controlling friendship who needed someone to name what was happening.
Neuroscience and Pre-Science Track¶
The Neuroscience and Cognitive Science (NACS) program operates across twenty participating departments and units, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of brain science research at UMD. Undergraduate students pursuing neuroscience-adjacent paths---like Devon Morgan's undeclared pre-science track with an intention toward medical school---take foundational courses in biology, chemistry, psychology, and neuroscience before declaring a major that aligns with their graduate school ambitions.
Devon enters UMD three months into treatment for ADHD and depression, his brain functioning differently than it did during the pre-diagnosis years. The lectures that would have been static---forty-five minutes of a professor talking while Devon's untreated brain generated competing signals at equal volume---now have edges. The pre-science curriculum gives him the academic foundation for a path toward neuroscience, medical school, and eventually the psychiatry career that grows from his conviction that brains like his deserve doctors who understand them from the inside.
Athletics¶
The Maryland Terrapins compete in NCAA Division I as members of the Big Ten Conference, fielding teams in twenty varsity sports. The athletic department's facilities anchor North Campus, with Xfinity Center---the 17,950-seat arena that opened in 2002---serving as the home court for Terrapins basketball and the physical center of the athletic complex. Practice facilities, weight rooms, an athletic training center, a seven-thousand-square-foot academic support center, and the administrative offices that manage the scholarship apparatus surround the arena in a cluster that creates a campus-within-a-campus for student-athletes.
Men's basketball carries particular historical weight at UMD. The 2002 national championship under Gary Williams established the program as capable of competing at the highest level, and the subsequent move to the Big Ten in 2014 raised the competitive stakes. For Marcus Washington III, arriving on a full scholarship in fall 2015, the program represents both opportunity and proving ground. The West Baltimore High gym where he caught a scout's eye held a few hundred seats; Xfinity Center holds seventeen thousand. The opponents he faced in Baltimore's public school league were talented; Big Ten opponents are bigger, stronger, and more experienced. The distance between high school basketball and Division I basketball is measured not in miles but in the speed of the game, the strength of the bodies, and the institutional machinery that surrounds every aspect of a student-athlete's life.
The full athletic scholarship---tuition, room, board, fees, books, and a cost-of-attendance stipend of approximately $2,820 per year---provides Marcus with access to education that his family's financial circumstances would not otherwise allow. Diana's instruction that the degree matters more than the basketball is the framework Marcus carries into a program where the institution's incentives run in the opposite direction: the athletic department invests in Marcus's body and its performance, while the academic support center tries to ensure his mind keeps pace with the eligibility requirements that let him stay on the court. The tension between these institutional priorities---athlete-as-revenue-generator versus athlete-as-student---is not unique to UMD but plays out with particular intensity in a Big Ten program where television contracts and conference revenue depend on competitive athletic performance.
Culture and Environment¶

UMD's campus culture reflects the characteristics of a large public research university: diverse student body, sprawling geographic footprint, decentralized social life organized around residence halls, Greek organizations, student clubs, athletic fandom, and the commercial strip along Route 1 that provides the restaurants and bars where campus social life overflows. The university enrolls students from all fifty states and more than 120 countries, creating a campus environment where diversity is structural rather than aspirational.
By 2015, UMD's undergraduate student body is approximately 30 percent students of color, with a significant Black student population drawn largely from the Baltimore-Washington corridor. The university is a PWI---predominantly white institution---and the dynamics that accompany that designation are present and real: microaggressions, code-switching pressures, the experience of being one of a handful of Black students in a lecture hall, the navigation of predominantly white social spaces where cultural references require translation. However, the critical mass of Black students, the proximity to D.C.'s Black professional class, and the university's own complicated integration history create a campus where Marcus, Devon, and Keisha can find community without building it from scratch.
The social ecosystems that the three freshmen enter are distinct. Marcus's world is the athletic program---teammates, training schedules, the particular culture of Division I basketball where your body is the institution's investment. Devon's world is the pre-science academic track---lecture halls, study groups, the library stacks. Keisha's world is the College of Education---the Benjamin Building, the counseling curriculum, the education students who understand what it means to build a career around helping people. The campus brings these worlds into proximity without merging them, and the spaces where they overlap---Route 1 restaurants, the Stamp Student Union, the paths that cross McKeldin Mall---are where the three characters' UMD lives intersect.
Accessibility and Inclusion¶
UMD provides disability accommodations through the Accessibility and Disability Service (ADS), coordinating academic accommodations including extended test time, note-taking services, accessible materials, and modified attendance policies. Physical accessibility varies across a campus whose buildings span more than a century of construction---newer facilities meet contemporary ADA standards while older buildings present the limitations common to mid-century institutional architecture.
Disability Policy vs. Practice¶
The university's inclusion landscape for the Faultlines characters centers less on formal disability accommodation than on the broader question of institutional belonging. Devon Morgan navigates the campus as a student three months into ADHD and depression treatment---his accommodations are pharmaceutical rather than institutional, the Vyvanse and Effexor providing the cognitive scaffolding that lets him function in lecture halls designed for neurotypical attention spans. His disability is invisible, managed privately, the kind of condition that doesn't register in the university's accessibility infrastructure unless he chooses to disclose.
Marcus Washington III navigates as a Black student-athlete from West Baltimore---a identity category that carries its own institutional dynamics around visibility, expectation, and the assumption that his presence on campus is justified by what his body can do on a basketball court rather than what his mind can do in a classroom. The academic support center exists precisely because the institution recognizes that student-athletes need academic scaffolding, but the support carries the implicit message that athletes cannot be trusted to manage their own academic lives without supervision.
Keisha Clark navigates as a Black woman from a working-class Baltimore neighborhood entering a university where the social dynamics of race, class, and gender intersect with the particular pressures of being a basketball player's girlfriend on a campus where athletes are public figures. Her accessibility needs are emotional and social rather than physical---the need for space to build identity independent of the controlling relationship that defined her adolescence, the need for an environment where new friendships don't feel like threat assessments.

Among Black families in the Baltimore-Washington corridor, UMD occupies a specific place in the landscape of higher education options. It is not an HBCU---it does not carry the cultural affirmation and communal identity of a Howard University or a Morgan State. But it is close to home, affordable with scholarships and in-state tuition, academically strong, and large enough that Black students can find community within its population even as they navigate a predominantly white institution. For the Washington family, UMD represented the institution that would honor Marcus's athletic talent while providing the academic credential Diana insisted upon. For the Morgans, it offered Devon academic quality within driving distance of the Roland Park home. For Keisha, it housed the specific counseling program that matched her specific ambition.
Within the Faultlines universe, UMD's legacy is inseparable from the question the campus poses to its three Baltimore freshmen: does the progress hold? Can the recovery arcs established in high school survive the removal of the Baltimore support structures that enabled them? The university provides the institutional framework, but the answer depends on what Marcus, Devon, and Keisha carry inside them---and on whether the campus's spaces, programs, and proximity to each other create the conditions for continued growth or new kinds of pressure that Baltimore couldn't have predicted.
