Darnell Taylor and Tre Martin share a bond forged in childhood and tested by fire. Both action-oriented protectors within their friend group, they were the two who physically pulled Kevin Williams to safety when Officer Rodriguez pointed a gun at him in June 2019. Their instincts aligned in that moment—grab Kevin, yank him back, protect their brother—demonstrating a partnership built on years of looking out for each other and their friends.

Darnell and Tre are the Survivors' two action-oriented protectors—the ones who move when the moment requires movement, who put their bodies between danger and the people they love without calculating the cost first. Their shared instinct on June 15, 2019—grabbing Kevin simultaneously, yanking him backward in coordinated motion—was not planned. It was the product of years of Black male brotherhood in which the function of protection was practiced daily: walking Marcus home from school, standing between him and bullies, positioning themselves between their friends and whatever the neighborhood produced. The rooftop was just the most extreme version of something they had been doing since they were six.

Both chose careers that institutionalized this protective instinct, and both careers carry the specific weight of being Black men in American uniforms. Darnell wears the badge of a police department that pointed a gun at his best friend. Tre wears the uniform of a military that has historically used Black men as expendable bodies while denying them the full citizenship they fought for. Both navigate these contradictions daily, and neither pretends the contradictions don't exist. Their friendship after their paths diverged—Darnell to the police academy, Tre to the Marines—carries the particular solidarity of two Black men who chose to serve within flawed institutions because the alternative was leaving those institutions entirely to the people who made them dangerous in the first place.

The defining moment: June 15, 2019, when Rodriguez pointed his weapon at Kevin. Without hesitation, both Darnell and Tre moved simultaneously to pull Kevin backward out of the line of fire. Their coordinated action—born of years of friendship and shared protective instincts—saved Kevin from potential harm.

Their paths diverged after: Darnell toward police reform, Tre toward military service. Yet when Tre was critically injured in November 2026, Darnell immediately flew to San Diego to be at his bedside.
