WNPC Honolulu Kalihi Residential Property
The WNPC Kalihi Residential Property is the seventh and final property in the WNPC expansion model, and it operates in the most challenging housing market in the network. Hawai'i's housing costs are the highest in the nation, and Kalihi -- while more affordable than Waikīkī or Kailua -- still prices out the working-class Pacific Islander and Filipino families who have lived there for generations. The WNPC subsidy that provides below-market housing at every other site is most critical here, because in Honolulu, "below market" can still mean "unaffordable" without significant subsidy.
The property follows the WNPC model: renovated apartment building, three-population mix (staff, patients, community), enhanced adaptive units, community spaces open to the neighborhood. The multilingual tenant communications operate in English, Hawaiian, Filipino, Samoan, and Marshallese. The community garden grows the same healing plants that the clinic's garden grows -- tī leaf, 'ōlena, herbs -- connecting the residential property's outdoor space to the cultural healing tradition that shapes Ka Hale Ola.
The community space hosts neighborhood gatherings, cultural events, and the Pacific Islander community programming that Kalihi's existing organizations coordinate. WNPC does not replace Kalihi's community infrastructure -- it provides a room for it, and the community uses it as they see fit.
For WNPC staff, the Kalihi housing is the difference between working at Ka Hale Ola and being able to afford to live in the state where they work. Hawai'i's cost of living pushes healthcare workers to the mainland regularly, and the affordable on-campus and Kalihi housing provides the retention anchor that prevents the Honolulu site from losing its team to the economic reality of island life.
