Children’s Hospital at Montefiore

Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) was a pediatric teaching hospital on Montefiore Medical Center’s Moses Campus in the Bronx. It provided inpatient, intensive, emergency, and specialty care for children and adolescents.

Charlie Rivera’s 2023 Hospitalization

In November 2023, sixteen-year-old Charlie Rivera was admitted to CHAM’s pediatric intensive-care unit after a gabapentin overdose in a suicide attempt. Clinicians stabilized and treated him while Reina Rivera remained at the hospital. Juan Rivera stayed at the Rivera home with fourteen-year-old Samuel, and telephone calls connected the family across the hospital and household.

Peter Liu followed Charlie to the hospital and broke down while waiting to learn whether he would survive. Reina held him through the crisis. During the hospitalization, Samuel wrote Charlie the letter that Charlie kept for the rest of his life.
