Overview
Johns Hopkins Hospital anchored the Baltimore medical world around Alexander Morgan, Logan Weston, and several members of their professional orbits. Alexander completed his orthopedic surgery residency there from 1987 through 1992, joined the attending staff, and remained in the system for his established career; by February 2015, he was chief of orthopedic surgery. Logan later trained and practiced within the Hopkins system, and the Johns Hopkins Pediatric Neurology Floor was one of his defining residency settings.
In early 2050, Logan spent approximately two weeks in intensive care and another four to five weeks in step-down treatment and early rehabilitation at Johns Hopkins after COVID progressed to pneumonia, sepsis, and septic shock. He required mechanical ventilation and vasopressors, survived a brief cardiac arrest, and left with oxygen and post-intensive care syndrome.
Clinical and Educational Role
Johns Hopkins Hospital served as a setting for residency training, orthopedic surgery, pediatric neurology, cancer care, medical mentorship, critical illness, and rehabilitation. Alexander’s multi-decade career established one branch of the Morgan family’s professional life there. Its role in Logan’s life crossed the patient-clinician boundary: it was both a professional institution and the hospital where he survived his most severe post-accident medical crisis.
In summer 2021, Edward Pennington was admitted after a severe seizure during a dangerous intracranial-pressure crisis. Medical treatment did not lower the pressure sufficiently, and he underwent VP shunt placement with Julia Weston and Dr. Jonathan Mathews involved in his neurological and operative care. Edward remained hospitalized for sixteen days.
