Mi Vida - Composition¶
Overview¶
"Mi Vida" is an unreleased original composition by Ezra Cruz, written the night his daughter Lia was born. The title, Spanish for "My Life," captures everything Lia became to him from the moment she entered the world. The piece remained private for years—too personal to release commercially—until Lia herself performed it alongside her father at his 50th Anniversary Bash, marking her official public debut.
Background and Creation¶
Ezra wrote "Mi Vida" in the hours after Lia's birth, unable to sleep, overwhelmed by the reality of fatherhood. While Marisol rested and baby Lia slept, Ezra sat with his trumpet and let the melody come. The piece emerged fully formed, as if it had been waiting for her arrival to exist.
The composition was never intended for album release or public performance. It belonged to Lia—a musical birth certificate, a father's first promise set to melody. Ezra played it for her throughout her childhood: quiet renditions at bedtime, soft phrases when she was sick, the melody hummed while carrying her on his shoulders.
Public Debut¶
At Ezra's 50th Anniversary Bash, Lia Cruz—age thirteen—made her official public debut by joining her father onstage for a stripped-down performance of "Mi Vida." No flashy production. No backup dancers. Just a mic, a spotlight, her father's trumpet, and a legacy passed from one generation to the next.
