On the ship, under stars, talking to a girl who saw him as "just a boy worth spending time with," Logan accessed something that white teenagers take for granted: the freedom to be young and awkward and interested without the weight of racial performance.

Nia kissing Logan goodnight—gently, tentatively, in the way first kisses should be—represented an age-appropriate Black teenage romance without the distortion that American culture typically imposes. The moment wasn't hypersexualized, wasn't coded as threatening, wasn't freighted with the racial anxieties that shadow Black male desire in public spaces. It was simply sweet.
