Darnell Taylor and Tre Martin
Darnell Taylor and Tre Martin have been friends since childhood in West Baltimore and are members of The Survivors. Both moved quickly toward danger when someone in the group needed protection. In June 2019, they acted together to pull Kevin Williams out of Officer Rodriguez’s line of fire. Their friendship continued through Darnell’s police career, Tre’s Marine service, and the recovery that followed Tre’s catastrophic injuries in December 2026.
Origins
Darnell and Tre met through the West Baltimore Recreation Center circa 2007–2008. Alongside Kevin and Jamal, they defended MJ from bullying and repeatedly challenged adults who failed to include him. By the summer 2014 crisis, both boys had spent months objecting to the recreation center’s treatment of MJ.
After volunteer Shanice assaulted MJ, Tre confronted her while Darnell focused on the fact that she had hurt their friend and did not appear to care. Both refused her attempts to minimize what had happened. Their reactions differed in expression but came from the same practiced loyalty to the group.
Dynamics and Communication
Darnell and Tre were among the Survivors’ most direct protectors. They did not need a discussion before responding to immediate danger; during the 2019 rooftop encounter, they reached for Kevin at the same time and pulled him backward together.
Tre’s quiet, grounded presence also made him an anchor for Darnell outside emergencies. During Darnell’s police-academy training and the racism and institutional politics surrounding his career choice, Tre understood the pressure of serving inside an institution whose history and current practices had harmed people like them. He did not require Darnell to simplify that contradiction.
Their communication relied on shared activity, brief direct statements, basketball, group meals, and the wider rhythms of the Survivors. Neither needed constant conversation to maintain the friendship.
Service and Institutional Context
Both men entered uniformed service after the 2019 police violence. Darnell joined the Baltimore Police Department with a commitment to de-escalation and accountability. Tre joined the Marine Corps and became a Reconnaissance-qualified sergeant. Darnell served in the department whose officers had threatened his friends; Tre navigated a predominantly white military culture while retaining his ties to West Baltimore. Their careers gave them different experiences of serving within institutions that had also harmed Black people.
The friendship gave them a place to acknowledge those contradictions without treating either uniform as proof that the underlying harm had disappeared. Darnell remained connected to Tre through deployments and military separation.
Shared History and Milestones
Summer 2014
Main article: Summer 2014 MJ Assault Crisis
Darnell and Tre joined Kevin and Jamal in advocating for MJ after recreation-center volunteers progressively excluded him from activities. When Shanice assaulted MJ, they confronted her and remained with him while Kelsey Morrison and the center director responded. Tre went to get the director; Darnell reassured MJ that he had not caused the assault.
June 2019

MJ’s four friends reached him before police, talked him through the crisis, and persuaded him to drop the knife he had carried onto the roof. After Officer Rodriguez pointed his weapon at the unarmed Kevin and fired a warning shot, Darnell and Tre pulled Kevin backward out of the line of fire.
Police Academy and Marine Service
Their adult paths separated them geographically but did not end the friendship. Tre attended Darnell’s police-academy graduation. Darnell remained part of the group chat and ordinary contact that connected Tre to Baltimore through Marine training and deployments.
December 2026 and Recovery
Main article: December 2026 Camp Pendleton Incident - Event
After Tre was critically injured while saving more than thirty service members, Darnell traveled to San Diego with Kevin, MJ, and Jamal. Tre, who had repeatedly put his body between other people and danger, now needed others’ presence and practical support. As he emerged from coma, familiar people and adjustments to communication became part of his care. The change was difficult for someone accustomed to protecting his friends and reluctant to ask for help himself.
Health, Access, and Care
Tre’s incomplete spinal cord injury, chronic pain, traumatic brain injury, hearing loss, tinnitus, and fatigue changed the logistics of spending time together. In June 2027, while Darnell was recovering from the shooting that had ended his patrol career, he and Kevin acquired a Baltimore house with wheelchair access, hearing and fatigue accommodations, and a bedroom treated as Tre’s whenever he stayed there. The design kept Tre’s place in their household practical as well as familial.
