Elliot Landry and Charlie Rivera
Overview
Elliot Landry and Charlie Rivera became friends through Jacob Keller and developed a brotherly chosen-family bond. Elliot, Jacob’s executive assistant and care coordinator from 2032, described Charlie as “five parts chaos, two parts glitter, one part disaster.” His affectionate exasperation coexisted with fierce protection: he would “knock a man out for making Charlie cry” if someone hurt him.
Elliot could ground Charlie during anxious spirals and maintained a detailed list of “Charlie-related emergencies” and appropriate responses. Charlie brought humor, visible feeling, and activity into Elliot’s carefully managed life. Their friendship made room for both practical care and shared pleasure without requiring either man to hide his limitations.
Origins
Elliot met Charlie through Jacob after beginning work as his executive assistant and care coordinator in 2032, when Elliot was twenty-nine. Charlie had been Jacob’s friend since their Juilliard years and was part of the CRATB chosen-family network. Elliot came to know him both as Logan’s husband and band co-founder and as someone whose medical needs shaped family plans.
As Elliot became part of Jacob’s family network, he learned how Charlie and Jacob communicated and how Charlie’s chronic illness affected travel and gatherings. Their acquaintance through Jacob developed into a friendship with its own patterns of humor, stillness, and care.
Dynamics and Communication
Elliot and Charlie communicated through affectionate exasperation, protective teasing, and practical care. Elliot found Charlie’s energy endearing and sometimes exhausting, especially when Charlie continued performing or entertaining others while he needed to rest.
Charlie could tease Elliot and draw him into humor without requiring him to match Charlie’s pace. Elliot’s exasperation did not weaken his loyalty when Charlie was frightened, ill, or hurt.
Elliot learned Charlie’s emotional and medical patterns well enough to offer steady company during anxious spirals and practical support during symptom flares. His emergency list applied the same attention to Charlie’s safety that he brought to Jacob’s care, without treating Charlie’s need for help as a loss of dignity.
Elliot’s size, strength, and experience gave Charlie another person in the family who could support or carry him safely when fainting or motion sickness removed other options. Charlie recognized the effort beneath Elliot’s competence and related to him as family rather than as staff adjacent to Jacob.
Charlie, ordinarily restless and expressive, could become still and quiet beside Elliot. He could also be more candid about his physical limits with someone he trusted to adjust without pity. That ease was part of their friendship alongside the more visible teasing and crisis support.
Cultural and Disability Context
Elliot was mixed-race Black American and Puerto Rican and grew up in Pine Hollow, Alabama. Charlie was Puerto Rican and Nuyorican and grew up in Jackson Heights, Queens. Their shared Puerto Rican heritage existed alongside different regional, racial, linguistic, and family histories. Elliot’s daily life was shaped by Southern Black family and church traditions, with memories of ordinary places such as the Piggly Wiggly; his mother’s Puerto Rican heritage was another part of his family identity. Elliot spoke English and understood more of Charlie’s Spanish or Spanglish during a crisis than others sometimes expected. Charlie used English and Spanish.
Their closeness developed through Jacob and Elliot’s practical role in the household. Elliot anticipated mobility and medical needs without treating Charlie only as someone requiring care. Elliot had learned early that his size could be read as threatening, while five-foot-five Charlie refused to make himself quiet for other people’s comfort. Their different ways of taking up space belonged to their lives rather than to fixed Southern Black or Nuyorican masculine styles.
Both men had substantial disabilities and had been underestimated by institutions. Their friendship gave each a relationship in which support, competence, humor, and personhood could coexist. The care they offered one another belonged to this chosen family rather than to a universal racial or cultural script.
Shared History
2038 Puerto Rico Trip
During the 2038 trip to Puerto Rico, Charlie became ill during travel. A slow tube feed at the airport gate worsened his nausea. Riley and Elliot helped protect his safety and privacy, and Elliot carried him during boarding and deplaning when he could not walk safely. The episode showed that Charlie could rely on Elliot for physical assistance without being reduced to a medical problem.
Later Medical Crises
Elliot maintained a list of Charlie’s emergency patterns and appropriate responses, including when family support was sufficient and when professional medical care was needed. He could help stabilize or carry Charlie, manage equipment, and coordinate a response during POTS flares, gastroparesis episodes, or other crises. When Logan was unavailable or overwhelmed, Elliot could step in; Charlie likewise understood when Jacob needed Elliot’s attention.
At an Austin jazz festival, Charlie tried to catch Elliot as Elliot collapsed from heatstroke onstage. The difference in their size made the attempt physically impossible, and both fell. Charlie dislocated his shoulder, vomited as heat and exertion worsened his POTS, and lost consciousness beside Elliot. He later rejected public claims that Elliot had endangered him and said he had chosen to try to break his friend’s fall. During a separate backstage faint, Elliot carried Charlie to a quiet recovery space and stayed until his disorientation and embarrassment eased.
Logan’s COVID and sepsis crisis in 2050 and his 2058 heart attack also affected the wider chosen family and Charlie’s sense of safety. Elliot belonged to the same network of people who understood both men’s care needs. No specific intervention by Elliot during either crisis is recorded.
Elliot’s Cancer Treatment
Elliot’s brain-tumor diagnosis and treatment made his own vulnerability visible within the family. Jacob and Charlie remained part of his support network while Ayana served as his primary medical advocate. During Elliot’s ninth chemotherapy cycle, Charlie used his public platform to gather support for him. Their care thus moved in both directions rather than leaving Elliot permanently in the role of caregiver.
Relationship Within the Chosen Family
The friendship was primarily lived at family gatherings, during travel, and in private responses to illness and anxiety. Elliot was publicly known for his work with Jacob and his marriage to Ayana; within the family, Charlie knew his protective loyalty, detailed planning, and willingness to stay near someone in distress. Elliot recognized that Charlie’s humor and movement could coexist with serious physical suffering. Charlie recognized the gentleness beneath Elliot’s size and reserved manner.
Their different temperaments allowed teasing and quiet companionship to coexist. Charlie could be expressive without having to perform wellness, and Elliot could offer care beyond his closest relationships with Jacob and Ayana without being treated only as a caretaker. Each remained a full participant in a chosen family whose support flowed among several people.
