Riley Mercer and Charlie Rivera

Riley Mercer and Charlie Rivera were friends, bandmates, and members of the same chosen-family network. They attended Juilliard and joined the musicians who formed CRATB.

Foundation of the Friendship

Riley and Charlie’s friendship developed through their shared musical education and work with CRATB.

Dynamics and Communication

Riley’s reserved, direct communication differed from Charlie’s more openly expressive manner. During the early conflict between Charlie and Ezra Cruz, Riley told Ezra when he was wrong and then stayed with Charlie after Ezra’s words hurt him. The incident established that Riley could be honest with one friend while supporting the other.

Riley and Charlie also understood each other’s need for rest during demanding rehearsals and performances. They could share quiet space without treating sleep, fatigue, or a need to sit down as a social failure, and their friendship included practical accommodation during CRATB’s work.

Cultural and Social Context

Riley and Charlie both had Puerto Rican heritage. Riley’s partner, Carmen Rivera, was connected to Charlie through this chosen-family network rather than through biological kinship.

Public and Professional Context

Their professional relationship continued through CRATB’s career. Riley played lead guitar and also worked in composition, sound design, drums, percussion, and production; Charlie performed as the band’s lead vocalist and saxophonist.

Ending

The friendship ended with Charlie’s death in 2081.
