Logan Weston and Nia

Logan Weston and Nia met during Logan’s sixteenth-birthday Caribbean cruise in spring 2024. Their connection began with a karaoke duet, continued through music, sightseeing, and time together on deck, and ended after they shared Logan’s first kiss on the final night of the trip.

How They Met

Logan’s friends bet him eighty dollars that he could not quiet the teen karaoke lounge with a solo performance. After he sang Al Green’s ‘’Let’s Stay Together’‘, Nia introduced herself and invited him to sing ‘’Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’’ with her. Both sang well, and their duet became the beginning of the relationship.

Nia attended a performing-arts high school and had sung and played piano since childhood. Her parents joined Logan’s family and friends for breakfast after the karaoke performances. Her father was a Philadelphia police officer, and her mother was a psychology professor at Penn State.

Development During the Cruise

Logan and Nia spent increasing amounts of time together over the following days. They exchanged playlists, listened through shared earbuds, and discussed the music they each played. Some conversations lasted late into the night under the stars and had nothing to do with grades, track times, or college applications. Nia’s ease with him let Logan enjoy her company without trying to present himself as an exceptional student. During their March 26 excursion in Old San Juan, Nia asked Logan about Spanish colonial architecture and listened as he explained building materials, water systems, and trade routes. James and Jordan accompanied them during part of the excursion.

On another afternoon, they sat in lounge chairs on a quieter section of the pool deck, where Logan fell asleep for approximately thirty minutes. When he woke, he apologized repeatedly for falling asleep while they were together. Nia told him that he had not ignored her and that he was allowed to rest. Malik, Jordan, Mason, and James later found them holding hands and teased Logan about the developing relationship.

First Kiss and Goodbye

On the final night of the cruise, Logan and Nia walked alone on an upper deck after dinner and kissed. Logan enjoyed the kiss and cared about Nia, but he did not experience the romantic excitement he had expected. He did not yet understand the difference between affection and romantic attraction. He told his four friends about the kiss later that night while they were gathered in one of their cabins.

Logan and Nia had exchanged phone numbers before disembarkation. The following morning, Nia hugged him, kissed his cheek, and said goodbye. They later lost touch, and the relationship ended without conflict.

Significance

Nia was Logan’s first kiss and his first brief romantic relationship. The experience remained a positive part of his adolescence. For a Black teenager accustomed to being evaluated for achievement and wary of how others interpreted him, the cruise gave Logan room for an ordinary, gentle first romance. As Logan later understood his sexuality, the difference between what he had felt with Nia and what he felt for Charlie Rivera helped him recognize romantic love without diminishing the affection or trust he had shared with Nia.
