Danny Ross and Jess Ross

Danny Ross and Jessica Lee Reynolds met in high school around 2010 or 2011, married young, and became the parents of Caleb Ross. Their romantic relationship ended before Danny’s death, but they remained legally married and continued co-parenting Caleb. Jess was Danny’s legal wife and widow when he died in 2022.

Overview

Danny and Jess’s relationship began as a teenage romance in Portland and continued through marriage, parenthood, romantic separation, and a cooperative co-parenting partnership. Jess became Jessica Lee Ross when they married and kept the Ross surname while they were separated.

Origins

Danny and Jess met during high school. Martha’s Diner became one of their regular gathering places, and they shared their first kiss in the diner’s parking lot after a school dance.

Jess recognized Danny’s intelligence despite the academic barriers created by untreated ADHD and suspected learning disabilities. She also learned about the practical effects of his cyclic vomiting syndrome, migraines, anemia, GERD, anxiety, and limited access to consistent healthcare.

Relationship Development

Danny and Jess married while they were young. Their son, Caleb Daniel Ross, was born on June 13, 2016, when Jess was nineteen and Danny was twenty-one. Caleb’s middle name carried Danny’s first name.

The demands of Caleb’s complex care and Danny’s unstable health placed pressure on the marriage. Danny and Jess eventually separated romantically, but they did not divorce. They remained legally married and continued sharing responsibility for Caleb until Danny died.

Dynamics and Communication

Jess handled much of the planning, medical coordination, and systems navigation within the household. Danny contributed work income, daily care, affection, humor, and practical tasks within his capacity. He called Caleb Buddy and Big Man and remained involved after the romantic separation.

Jess supported Danny during severe illness and understood that his executive-function and academic barriers did not reflect a lack of intelligence. Danny trusted her judgment and continued to show up for her and Caleb even after their relationship changed.

Health, Access, and Caregiving

Danny’s cyclic vomiting syndrome caused prolonged episodes of vomiting, dehydration, and medical risk. His GERD, chronic migraines, iron-deficiency anemia, ADHD, anxiety, fatigue, and suspected learning disabilities also affected work, school, household responsibilities, and his available energy for care.

Caleb was a nonspeaking AAC user with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and hypotonic cerebral palsy. Jess coordinated most of his medical care and communication access, while Danny participated in daily care and remained one of Caleb’s familiar caregivers.

Ending and Bereavement

Danny suffered a sudden brain aneurysm at Jess’s home in 2022. Jess called emergency services and attempted CPR, but he could not be saved. Because they remained legally married, Jess was his wife and widow despite their romantic separation.

Jess preserved photographs and stories of Danny for Caleb. After she later married Noah Donelly, the family continued treating Danny as Caleb’s father rather than presenting Noah as his replacement.
