Devon Morgan and Shanice

Devon Morgan and Shanice dated for approximately three months, from around May through August 2014. The relationship began after they hooked up at a party and ended after Shanice assaulted MJ at the West Baltimore Recreation Center and used a disability slur in messages to Devon.

Beginning of the Relationship

Devon and Shanice knew each other through volunteer work at the recreation center. She had volunteered there for three years; he had started more recently, initially seeking service hours for college applications. After they hooked up at a party in approximately May 2014, Shanice began telling people they were together, and Devon went along with it. She was drawn to his appearance and wealthy Roland Park background, while he found that accepting her attention required less effort than refusing it.

Devon was living with untreated depression and anxiety during the relationship. He was emotionally numb, often slept until noon on weekends, struggled to eat, and moved through school and volunteering without much sense of purpose. Loneliness felt worse to him than remaining with Shanice, and having a girlfriend helped him appear functional. He neither loved nor hated her; most of the time he felt almost nothing. He frequently followed her decisions because resisting required energy he did not have. Shanice criticized his passivity, motivation, and ambition, presenting remarks about laziness and wasted potential as concern even though they echoed what he heard from his parents. She expected him to support her position within the volunteer group.

Shanice usually chose what they did, where they went, and how others saw them as a couple. Devon rarely asserted a preference. In public they appeared to be together, but he often seemed disconnected at the center, looking at his phone rather than engaging. Privately, the imbalance left little mutual intimacy or respect: she directed and criticized while he complied, too depleted to recognize or challenge the pattern fully.

Recreation-Center Dynamic

At the center, Shanice treated MJ’s disability-related fatigue as a reason to leave him out of activities and used her seniority to control the volunteer hierarchy. Devon’s silence as her boyfriend helped sustain that hierarchy. He did not initially challenge her or the other volunteers, although MJ’s friends repeatedly tried to include him. His depression explained his detachment but did not remove his responsibility for the harm his passivity allowed.

Kelsey’s arrival made the neglect harder to ignore. She questioned MJ’s positioning, exclusion, and care and directly challenged the volunteers after she witnessed Shanice assault him.

Social and Cultural Context

Devon and Shanice were Black teenagers from different parts of Baltimore. His affluent Roland Park upbringing gave him resources she did not share, while his depression made those advantages feel disconnected from any future he could want. Shanice’s criticism of his motivation carried an edge shaped by that class gap: she treated his comfort as something he had not earned and his distress as evidence of softness. His untreated illness and her controlling behavior shaped their conflict.

Their relationship was vulnerable to outside judgments that treated conflict between Black teenagers as evidence of a general cultural failing. The pressures between them were specific to their histories and circumstances. Devon’s wealth did not remove the racial expectations he faced, though it gave him access to protection and opportunity Shanice did not have. Neither of them had a way to speak honestly with the other about what they needed.

The class gap and the center’s disability attitudes also shaped their volunteer work. Shanice framed MJ’s exclusion as a practical response to limited resources, and other volunteers followed her lead. Devon’s inaction reflected his depleted state and his willingness to accept the center’s norms; it also left a disabled child without support. The harm exposed a failure of collective care within a community space where adults and teenagers shared responsibility for children. Ending the relationship after MJ’s assault began Devon’s more sustained effort to take responsibility for his own conduct and for the children he served.

Assault and Breakup

Shanice grabbed and shook MJ hard enough to leave four finger-mark bruises. Devon was not in the room during the assault, but he later saw photographs of the bruises, received Shanice’s messages about what she had done, and knew the broader pattern of neglect at the center. Seeing the injury and her dismissal of it brought anger and disgust through months of emotional numbness.

Shanice expected Devon to defend her after the center suspended her. She texted, “everyone’s turning on me and you won’t even answer??” and followed with “i didn’t even hurt him that bad. he’s fine. everyone’s making such a big deal out of nothing” and “i was trying to help him”. When Devon said she had hurt a child, Shanice answered, “barely! and he was being difficult. you know how he is”. She then accused him of betrayal: “omg you’re seriously doing this? you’re taking THEIR side?”

Her final message read:

are you seriously breaking up with me over this?? over some retarded kid who doesn’t even know what’s happening half the time? who just sleeps all day like a lazy piece of shit?

Shanice’s contempt for MJ in that message made Devon certain he could no longer remain with her. He threw his phone hard enough to crack its screen, ended the relationship, blocked her number, and sent Ms. Patricia a written account of the neglect and aftermath he knew. Ty heard the phone crash and came to check on Devon. Their conversation became the brothers’ first fully honest discussion of their mental health. When Devon worried that feeling numb meant he could no longer care about anyone, Ty told him, “The fact that you finally felt something—even if it was rage—means you’re not as empty as you think you are. You just needed something worth caring about.”

The breakup forced Devon to confront his own silence. Although he had not assaulted MJ, his inaction had helped leave the neglect unchallenged. He began trying to show up for the children and act on what he understood, even when doing so was difficult.

Facebook Retaliation

On the Saturday after Devon’s Thursday heat-exhaustion collapse, Shanice posted that Devon had thrown her under the bus over nothing, called him fake and a snake, and warned other girls that he would turn on them. She portrayed Kelsey as his new girlfriend, though they were not dating. The post received 128 likes and 64 comments, and unknown numbers sent Devon hostile messages. He blocked the numbers and did not respond publicly. Keisha offered to correct the account, Kelsey supplied her eyewitness support, and Ty stayed with Devon while respecting his choice not to engage. The readiness of strangers to judge him from Shanice’s account hurt more than her opinion of him.

End of Contact

The relationship ended permanently after the assault. Devon continued volunteering at the recreation center and became more directly involved with the children and with the center’s response to the neglect. On the Thursday after the Wednesday assault, he overexerted himself in extreme heat while trying to compensate for months of passivity and collapsed in the parking lot. Recovery helped him recognize that sustained participation would serve the children better than an effort that left him unable to continue. He later used his family’s resources for staff coffee supplies and lunch for the children, staying to help and see the results.
