Darren Ross and Zoey Thomas
Darren Ross and Zoey Thomas met in sixth grade during the 2013–2014 school year, when Zoey joined Darren’s existing friendship with Gabe Brooks. They began dating when Zoey was thirteen and Darren was fourteen, remained together through high school, and eventually married. Zoey took the name Zoey Linnea Ross. Their son was Daniel James “DJ” Ross.
Childhood Friendship
Zoey, born January 1, 2003, had skipped a grade and was ten when she began sixth grade. Darren was eleven and turned twelve on December 25, 2013. Her age did not make her peripheral to the group; her intelligence, directness, and consistent presence made the duo a trio.
The friendship formed while Darren’s home life was becoming visibly unstable. Zoey did not reduce him to the abuse, treat him as fragile, or perform pity. She continued talking to him about school, baseball, and ordinary life while making it clear that she would help when he wanted help.
Darren valued the intensity other people sometimes found excessive in Zoey. Her instinct was to understand a problem and build a plan; Gabe was more likely to use humor and trust that they would find their way through. Darren often helped each friend understand the other’s approach without asking either to become less themselves.
During the custody case, Marshall Thomas praised Danny’s efforts at a family dinner. Darren became overwhelmed and cried alone in the bathroom. Zoey checked on him at the door and made him laugh by telling him to take his time because the house had two other bathrooms. Her support left him room to recover without explaining his tears to the table.
The Custody Case and Move-In
Zoey and the Thomas family supported Darren through the custody case. She saw the exhaustion and fear Darren carried into school and remained present without demanding that he explain more than he wanted.
After Danny became Darren’s guardian, Zoey joined the chosen-family group that helped the brothers move into their apartment. The Thomas family helped paint and supplied blue baseball-themed bedding for Darren’s new room. Their care made the family home a familiar safe place years before Darren lived there.

Teenage Relationship
Darren and Zoey began dating in 2016, when she was thirteen and he was fourteen. The romantic relationship grew out of an already tested friendship rather than replacing it. Gabe remained the third point of the trio and family to them both.
By the time Zoey was fifteen and Darren sixteen, Marshall and Lydia Thomas understood that Darren was a lasting part of their daughter’s life. When Caleb’s increasing medical needs and Danny’s own health made the combined household load difficult, Darren decided to move into the Thomas home. Danny and Jess insisted that Darren was not in the way, but he wanted to reduce the responsibility Danny felt and give Danny, Jess, and Caleb more space.
Lydia agreed to the move immediately. Marshall agreed with clear household rules, which Darren followed closely. The move occurred around 2018, when Darren was sixteen and Zoey fifteen. Darren continued spending substantial time at Danny’s home, and the change did not end Danny’s guardianship or their parent-like sibling relationship.
Living in the same household made Darren and Zoey’s partnership part of daily family life. The Thomas home offered predictable expectations rather than rules that changed with an adult’s anger. Zoey had known Darren before the guardianship case and saw the move as her family making permanent a welcome they had extended for years.
Marriage and Family
Darren and Zoey eventually married, and Zoey took the surname Ross. Their marriage remained a partnership between two people with distinct work, friendships, grief, and needs. Zoey was not simply Darren’s caretaker, and Darren did not treat her ambition as secondary to his life.
They named their son Daniel James Ross. Daniel honored Daniel Jacob “Danny” Ross, while James was Darren’s middle name. Calling their son DJ gave him an everyday identity of his own within the family history the name carried.
Zoey became a medical-malpractice attorney and, after working in the field, founded Ross and Associates in her thirties. Darren was openly proud of his wife. He listened to and remembered the details she shared about her cases and understood why institutional failures in medicine mattered to her personally as well as professionally.
Using Ross in the firm’s name mattered to both of them. Zoey attached the name she had chosen at marriage to protection and advocacy, separate from the harm Darren associated with David, Dana, and Drake. She took on undervalued medical-malpractice claims that other practices might pass over and pressed for accountability when institutions had failed patients.
Danny’s Death and Continuing Grief
Darren was living with the Thomas family but remained frequently present in Danny’s life when Danny died from a brain aneurysm in 2022. Zoey had known Danny since childhood and understood that Darren lost both a brother and the person who had raised him.
She did not treat the grief as a problem she could solve or expect Darren to finish mourning on a schedule. Darren never fully recovered from the loss; Zoey stayed beside him as he learned to live with it. Gabe also remained part of their support, and the childhood trio continued into adulthood after Darren and Zoey married.
Mutual Support and Friendship
Zoey valued Darren’s steadiness, care, and willingness to take her seriously. He did not ask her to become quieter or less exacting to make other people comfortable. Darren valued her strategic mind, fierce loyalty, and refusal to withdraw when circumstances became complicated.
Both could become protective. Zoey’s protection often took the form of planning, naming injustice, and finding a next action. Darren’s took the form of observation, physical presence, and direct questions. Their history helped each recognize when protection was useful and when the other person needed companionship rather than intervention.
Zoey could confront Darren when he avoided a difficult subject; Darren could steady her when her own planning became anxious. Their support ran in both directions, including her demanding work and his continuing grief, without making either partner responsible for fixing the other.
Marriage changed the practical shape of their relationship with Gabe, but not its importance. Darren and Zoey were a couple; all three remained lifelong friends whose shared history included school, baseball, the custody crisis, the brothers’ first apartment, and Danny’s death.
