Mo and Elise’s Wedding (c. 2046)

Mo and Elise’s Wedding was the circa-June 2046 marriage of Maleko “Mo” Makani and Elise Makani at an accessible beachside venue near Baltimore. The wedding occurred less than a year after Jace’s October 2045 injury and before Amber’s February 2050 Sweet Sixteen. It brought Mo’s relatives from Oʻahu together with the couple’s mainland chosen family for a Hawaiian-fusion ceremony.

Overview

Mo and Elise had worked together on Charlie and Logan’s care team for approximately a decade before their friendship became romantic. They began dating shortly before Jace’s injury. By the time they married, Mo had become Jace and Amber’s chosen father, and the children had taken the Makani surname. Alika was also born around 2046.

The wedding combined Hawaiian ceremony and food with the couple’s Baltimore family life. Logan Weston officiated, Charlie Rivera delivered a message through AAC, and Jace and Amber gave their parents a surprise musical performance during the reception.

Background and Planning

Mo wanted his relatives from Oʻahu and his mainland chosen family in the same place. A wedding in Hawaiʻi would have excluded Charlie and Logan because of the medical cost of the flight, while transporting Mo’s large family to Baltimore was beyond what Mo could pay without taking on additional work.

During a family visit to Oʻahu, Mo tried to avoid the planning conversation rather than ask either side to miss the wedding. Elise explained the conflict to Mo’s sisters and later discussed it privately with Nina Cruz. Nina contacted Ezra Cruz, and the wider band-family network pooled its resources to charter a large private aircraft for approximately twenty members of Mo’s family.

After the Makani household returned to Baltimore, Charlie, Logan, and Ezra met them at BWI and told Mo that the charter had been arranged. Mo began sobbing hard enough to cough and struggle to catch his breath. Elise and Logan helped him use two puffs from his rescue inhaler and moved him into the heated van while he recovered. The travel gift allowed the wedding to remain near Baltimore without leaving Mo’s Oʻahu family out of the ceremony.

Wedding

The ceremony was held outdoors in June, with shade and accessible seating. An ʻoli opened the ceremony. Mo and Elise exchanged leis, and a water blessing connected the ceremony to Mo’s home and family. Mo wore a white linen aloha shirt, slacks, a maile lei, and no shoes. Elise wore a light dress and a haku lei.

Logan officiated the marriage. Charlie used his AAC system to deliver a short message during the ceremony. ʻUkulele and Hawaiian vocals accompanied the proceedings.

During the reception, Jace played ʻukulele while Amber sang in Hawaiian. Jace introduced the performance as a thank-you to Mo and Elise for showing the children what love was supposed to look like. At the end, he congratulated them as Mom and Dad. Mo cried openly and embraced both children.

The reception meal was prepared by a Hawaiian caterer. It included kalua pig, chicken long rice, lomi salmon, poi, haupia, malasadas, Spam musubi, and teriyaki beef skewers, with crab cakes, cornbread, fresh peaches, sweet tea, and strawberry shortcake alongside them.

Participants and Roles

Mo Makani and Elise Makani

Mo and Elise were the central figures and planned the ceremony around the needs of both branches of their family. Their marriage formalized a partnership and household that had already survived Jace’s injury, the end of Elise’s marriage to Mike, the custody proceedings, and the children’s surname change.

Jace Makani and Amber Makani

Jace and Amber participated as Mo and Elise’s children and performed together at the reception.

Logan Weston and Charlie Rivera

Logan officiated the wedding, and Charlie contributed an AAC message. Both had helped reveal the private-charter plan that allowed Mo’s Oʻahu relatives to attend.

Family and Cultural Context

Mo’s Hawaiian relatives participated in planning the ʻoli, lei exchange, blessing, music, and food. The ceremony took place in Maryland so that Charlie, Logan, and the mainland care-family network could attend, while the charter brought Mo’s parents, sisters, their partners and children, Ikaika, Ikaika’s wife, and other close relatives from Oʻahu.

Accessibility and Health Logistics

The outdoor venue included shade, accessible seating, and stable routes through the beachside setting for wheelchair users. The charter allowed the larger family group to travel together and carry mobility equipment and medical supplies. Charlie and Logan did not have to make the medically difficult flight to Hawaiʻi.

Immediate Outcome

Mo and Elise were legally married. The event brought both sides of their family together in Maryland and preceded the Makani household’s February 2050 commercial trip to Oʻahu for Amber’s Sweet Sixteen.
