Bay Lights Inner Harbor Holiday Outing (2047)
Bay Lights was a December 2047 family outing to the Inner Harbor holiday displays in Baltimore, Maryland. Charlie Rivera, Jacob Keller, Ava Harlow, and twelve-year-old Clara Keller, Emily Harlow-Keller, Raffie Cruz, and Ellie Liu attended. Charlie used his communication board to request rest and later fell asleep in his power wheelchair; the children recorded the displays and took photographs for him.
Background and Planning
Charlie and Jacob were both forty, and Jacob and Ava had been together for approximately two years. Charlie used a power wheelchair as his primary mobility aid, received most of his nutrition through tube feeding, and had periods when fatigue and aphasia made spoken communication unreliable. His AAC system included a laminated board clipped to his chair.
Logan Weston had planned to attend, but snowy weather aggravated his neuropathic pain, and he remained at the Weston townhouse. Jacob assured Logan that the group would keep Charlie safe. Before leaving, Ava told Logan, “We’ve got him, Lolo. You don’t have to be everywhere to be his. That boy is loved.”
The Outing
The group visited the waterfront lights, illuminated boats, and carousel. Charlie wore a scarf, beanie, puffy coat, and lap blanket; his feeding-tube line was secured beneath his coat, and the bag remained warm beside him. Jacob stayed beside Charlie’s chair while the children moved among the displays.
When Charlie began to droop and shake from fatigue, Ava asked whether he was all right. He pointed to “Tired” on his board. Jacob offered to return home, but Charlie shook his head and selected “Need a few minutes.” Emily signed, “Wait together?” and remained beside him while the group paused.
Charlie fell asleep shortly afterward. Jacob adjusted the wheelchair to support his head, and Ava stayed beside Jacob as he reacted to the progression of Charlie’s illness.
Photographs and Recordings
Clara recorded the lights on the water and the decorated boats, narrating, “For Uncle Charlie. So he doesn’t miss the good parts.” Emily photographed Raffie near a blue snowflake display, the moving carousel, and Charlie asleep in his chair. Ellie collected the photographs and videos and sent them to Logan with the message, “We’ve got him.”
The photographs and recordings allowed Charlie to return to the parts of the outing he had slept through. The children’s response also reflected their familiarity with disability and access as ordinary parts of family life.
