Danny’s Death (2022)

Danny’s death was the sudden death of Danny Ross from a brain aneurysm in 2022. Danny was twenty-six. He and Jess Ross were romantically separated but remained legally married and continued co-parenting Caleb Ross, making Jess his legal wife and widow. Several months before his death, they had begun trying to restore their romantic relationship.

Circumstances

Danny worked his usual shift at Bambi’s automotive shop on the day he died. He was laughing and trading smart remarks with Bambi and his coworkers only hours before the collapse. Although he had felt unwell, he treated the symptoms as another headache and later went to Jess’s home to help care for Caleb, who was ill.

At the house, Danny’s condition deteriorated abruptly. He warned Jess that he was going to vomit, emptied his dinner, and struggled to remain conscious. Jess called emergency services, tried to keep him responsive, and attempted resuscitation, but the aneurysm was fatal.

Caleb, who was five at the time, was present in the home during the crisis. Danny had remained one of his familiar caregivers after the romantic separation.

Immediate Aftermath

Danny’s death left Jess a young widow and Caleb’s sole surviving parent. Danny had continued participating in Caleb’s care after the romantic separation, so his death also removed a co-parent and familiar caregiver from their household.

For Darren, Danny’s death meant the loss of the person who had been his primary family for most of his life. Years later, in August 2039, when Jess showed Caleb photos from Danny’s photo album, Caleb recognized his father’s face and called him “Daaa,” demonstrating that some memory or recognition of Danny persisted despite seventeen years and profound cognitive limitations.

Darren Ross

For Darren, Danny’s death was the loss of his most foundational relationship. Danny had been parent and brother, protector and fellow survivor. The grief was complicated by the particular nature of their bond—the gratitude Darren carried for everything Danny had sacrificed, the guilt about whether he had ever adequately acknowledged or repaid that sacrifice.

At twenty, Darren was old enough to have his own life but young enough that the loss felt existential. Danny had been the constant, the one person who had always been there. Darren never fully recovered from the loss; learning to exist without Danny required not just grief but a reconstitution of identity.

The Ross Family Response

Danny’s extended family—his parents David and Dana, as well as grandparents, aunts, and uncles—maintained their estrangement following Danny’s death. They blamed Danny for the family rupture caused by the 2013–2014 custody battle and extended that blame to Jess and Caleb. Some relatives also implied that Danny must have done something reckless or ignored warning signs and therefore contributed to his own death. On Jess and Caleb

Jess’s relocation to Baltimore represented an attempt to build a new life after Danny’s death. There, she would eventually meet Noah Donelly, who would become a father figure to Caleb and a partner to Jess. Noah’s integration into their family didn’t replace Danny but added another layer of love and support.

On Darren

Darren’s processing of Danny’s death was supported by Gabe Brooks and Zoey Linnea Thomas, his teenage partner and eventual wife. Both had known Danny since the custody and move-in years and understood something of what the loss meant. The grief work continued through therapy and the life Darren built with Zoey; support did not make the loss temporary or complete.

On Danny’s Legacy

Danny’s legacy lived on in the people he had loved and protected. Caleb’s middle name—Daniel—kept Danny’s name within his son’s identity. Darren and Zoey later named their own son Daniel James “DJ” Ross: Daniel for Danny and James for Darren. The values Danny had demonstrated—fierce loyalty, showing up despite exhaustion, and choosing family repeatedly—became templates for how Darren and Jess approached their own lives.
