Mo Makani Arrives in Baltimore (Late January 2036)
In late January 2036, twenty-three-year-old Mo Makani moved from Oʻahu to Baltimore to begin work as Charlie Rivera and Logan Weston’s personal-care assistant and household coordinator. The move followed the remote interview in which the three men had recognized an immediate connection.
Arrival at BWI
Mo had shipped some of his belongings ahead and layered for the weather, but neither preparation was enough for his first Baltimore winter. After the long flight, he waited outside BWI Marshall Airport in temperatures in the high twenties. He shook hard enough that his teeth knocked together, and his hands became stiff and numb.
Logan had intended to collect Mo himself but was having a pain flare that morning. He sent a car instead and texted Mo that the driver would meet him at B5. Mo warmed his hands at the vehicle’s vents during the drive to the Rivera-Weston home.
Welcome and Suite
Charlie and Logan greeted Mo at the house. Mo tried to conceal how badly the cold had affected him. Charlie, who had been resting under blankets, asked Logan to help him transfer into his tilt chair so that he could show Mo the private suite prepared for him.
Charlie had stocked the suite with Hawaiian foods and bath products, familiar comforts, and actual Kona coffee ordered from the island. He and Logan told Mo that the room was meant to feel like his home rather than simply staff lodging. Mo answered, “Mahalo.”
Charlie then gave him time to settle. When Logan asked whether he was hungry, Mo admitted that he had eaten little during the trip. Logan offered jambalaya, his own cold-day comfort food when pain was high, and Mo ate two bowls as the heat and spices finally warmed him.
First Evening
During the meal, Logan gave Mo a practical demonstration of Charlie’s tube-feed setup. Charlie had recently vomited or rejected several feeds, so Logan explained that they were using a slower rate while trying to determine whether the formula or another change in Charlie’s body was responsible. He showed Mo the flush, connection, clamp, positioning, and signs that meant the feed should be paused. The demonstration was an orientation to the household’s current routine, not a test of Mo’s training.
Charlie became increasingly sleepy during the feed and asked Logan to come cuddle with him. Logan promised that he would follow after finishing in the kitchen. Mo, exhausted from the trip and full after dinner, went to his suite.
Although Charlie and Logan had welcomed him generously, Mo felt the distance from Oʻahu once he was alone. The heated bed, Hawaiian products, and food could not reproduce the island, his family, or the ocean outside his window. He called home and admitted both that Baltimore was painfully cold and that he believed he had chosen the right household.
After showering, Mo crossed the house while yawning and heard Charlie coughing, say “ow,” and retch into a basin. Logan was already supporting him through the reflux and vomiting. Mo brought drinks, cold washcloths, and another towel, then told Logan to call if they needed anything else. The episode gave him his first direct view of the physical reality beneath the household’s humor and welcome.
First Morning
Logan woke early to the smell of breakfast. Charlie remained asleep beside him, propped up for reflux, while Logan moved carefully through the residual pain of the previous day’s flare. He found Mo already in the kitchen making pancakes, breakfast potatoes, toast, and scrambled eggs.
Mo had been unable to sleep and used cooking to settle himself and carry part of home into the new house. He told Logan to let Charlie sleep. The quiet breakfast preparation became the household’s first morning with Mo living among them.
Aftermath
The first day established the practical basis of Mo’s work: reciprocal care, direct instruction, attention to Charlie’s changing body, and room for Mo’s own needs and cultural ties. His employment developed into chosen-family relationships with both men and continued until their deaths in 2081.
