Jacob Keller’s Death (2083)
Jacob Keller died at age seventy-six on a Tuesday in 2083 at the Mount Kisco home he shared with Ava. Ava held him through his final moments after he had spent the morning with relatives and chosen family gathered in the house.
Final Illness

The 2081 deaths of Charlie Rivera and Logan Weston were followed by a severe bipolar depressive episode, activation of longstanding complex trauma, and the accelerated effects of Jacob’s late-onset mild neurocognitive disorder. During the next two years, he became increasingly quiet, lost speech and daily functioning, required substantial household care, and repeatedly asked where Logan and Charlie were. His memory and communication remained uneven: he could struggle with clothing and sequencing while still recognizing people, retaining musical knowledge, making specific requests, and recalling details of his marriage.
Ava coordinated Jacob’s home care with Clara, Sean Wu, Mo Makani, Elise Makani, and the rest of the family. Clara and Sean expanded the home’s existing basement suite and moved their family into it, increasing the support available without removing Jacob from familiar surroundings. Riley, Peter, Ezra, Emily, and the wider chosen family remained involved.
Final Days
In 2083, two years after Clara’s family moved into the house, Jacob spent an afternoon drifting in and out of sleep. When he woke, he told Ava, “See Logan.” Ava initially understood him to be asking where Logan was and reminded him that Logan had died. Jacob corrected her and continued, “See Logan. See Charlie. Super sleep, Ava. Big one. See them soon.” When Ava told him she would never be ready to lose him, he answered, “Not lost. Just… see them.”
Ava called Clara, Riley, Peter, and Ezra and told them, “I think it’s soon. Come if you can.” Clara and Sean’s family were already living downstairs. Riley, Peter, and Ezra arrived by evening, and Emily joined the relatives and chosen family gathered at the house. Mo and Elise remained part of the care network during Jacob’s final days.
Final Morning and Death
Jacob woke shortly before sunrise and tapped Ava’s nose, a gesture the couple had used for “I love you” for decades. He asked, “Can we have spicey tea?” After Ava made his chai, he asked to sit with everyone in the living room. He spent the morning in his wheelchair with his circle around him, mostly quiet and offering small smiles as he looked from one person to another.
Around noon, Jacob asked Ava for “snuggles.” She helped him back to their bedroom, settled him into bed, and lay behind him with his head against her chest. Jacob asked, “Ava? Come… come, too? Come with Jacob?” Ava told him, “Not yet, love. But I’ll be right behind you. And I’ll carry you with me. Always.”
Jacob then told her, “Nap now, Ava. Wait for you, kay?” Ava answered, “You nap, love. I’ll be there when you wake. You wait for me.” Jacob died in her arms after one final breath.
Immediate Aftermath
Ava remained with Jacob before returning to the living room with his chai mug. She told the gathered family, “He’s napping now… but he’s waiting.”
Jacob and Ava had maintained a weekly Tuesday ritual at the Bookstore Café. That morning, Teresa, the barista, prepared his usual chai and a warm cookie divided into the large pieces he preferred. When the couple had not arrived by 11:00 a.m., she poured out the tea and wrote in the café notebook:
For Dr. Keller. You were more than a customer. Save me a seat. Tuesdays are yours.
After Jacob’s family announced his death, Teresa published her own tribute. She described his weekly visits, his “spicey tea” and “big cookie, soft pieces,” and the different ways he communicated as his speech changed. She kept his mug on the café shelf and his regular seat open, ending, “Tuesdays are still yours.” Clara, Riley, Ezra, Peter, former students, and listeners responded to the tribute and defended Jacob when commenters tried to reduce his life to earlier public medical crises.
Later Family History
Ava remained in the Mount Kisco home for approximately another year while handling Jacob’s papers, recordings, rights, archive, and belongings. After a final night there with Clara, Emily, and Sean, she moved to a garden cottage beside Clara and Sean’s home. Years later, she died peacefully in the cottage after an evening visit from Emily.
After her death, Ava went to find Jacob and joined him. His promise to wait for her was fulfilled.
