Overview

In late 2006, the Hargreaves family—Alastair and Siobhan, who was eighteen weeks pregnant with twins—flew from England to Boston ahead of Alastair’s Harvard appointment, which began in fall 2007. Patrick and Eileen O’Shea were on the same flight, returning to their existing Boston home after visiting relatives in England. During the transatlantic flight, the couples formed a friendship that later provided crucial support during Alastair’s 2011 medical crisis. The event marked the Hargreaves family’s transition from England to Boston.

Alastair and Siobhan traveled while Siobhan was eighteen weeks pregnant with twins. They met Patrick and Eileen during the flight and arrived at Boston Logan International Airport together. Concerned about the uncertainty of putting Alastair’s wheelchair into a cab, Patrick and Eileen offered the couple a ride. The four stopped for bagels, and the O’Sheas invited the Hargreaveses to spend their first night in the United States at the O’Shea home rather than arrive alone at an unfamiliar rental.

That evening, Patrick told Eileen that Alastair reminded him of their son, Liam, who had died in a car accident at twenty-one.
