Darren’s Migraine and David’s Explosion (2013)
Darren’s Migraine and David’s Explosion was the late-2013 medical and family crisis that prompted the investigation leading to the 2013–2014 Portland Custody Battle Arc. Darren Ross, then eleven and approaching his twelfth birthday, developed a severe migraine at the Ross family home, called Danny in a panic, and fainted before the emergency crew arrived. David then erupted at Danny in front of the medics.
Medical Crisis
Darren called Danny when the migraine became severe. Danny called 911 and rushed to the Ross home. Darren lost consciousness before the medics arrived and required emergency evaluation.
David responded to Danny’s presence with visible aggression and volatility. The outburst occurred in front of the emergency crew while Darren was medically vulnerable, allowing people outside the family to witness the conditions the brothers had previously managed in private.
Reports and Investigation
One of the emergency responders reported the incident and the concern for Darren’s safety. Darren’s pediatric neurologist, Dr. Ryan Coleman, later spoke with Danny about the wider history of neglect, fear, and volatility in the parental home and filed a second report.
The reports prompted child-welfare authorities to open an investigation. They did not themselves transfer Darren’s custody, but they brought the safety of David and Dana Ross’s household before the juvenile court and supported Danny’s later petition to become Darren’s guardian.
Later Significance
Dr. Coleman later testified during the first contested guardianship hearing about Darren’s migraine, fear, and lack of safety in the parental home. The event became part of a wider record that included home evaluations, interviews, Darren’s own statement to the court, and evidence of Danny’s longstanding caregiving role.
